#Ethiopia 🇪🇹/#Oromia: A new photo posted by a fighter of #Oromo Liberation Army (#OLA/#WBO).

The fighter seems to be carrying an uncommon Colt 603 - M16A1 assault rifle.
Although it's hard to say anything definite, the rifle might be smuggled from #Kenya 🇰🇪 originally.

🇭🇹🇺🇳🇰🇪UN approves Haiti security mission to fight gangs

The United Nations Security Council on Monday authorized a foreign security mission to Haiti, a year after the Caribbean country asked for help to fight violent gangs.

The 15-member council adopted a resolution, drafted by the United States and Ecuador, that authorizes the so-called Multinational Security Support mission "to take all necessary measures" - code for use of force.

China and Russia abstained from the vote, wary of authorizing the blanket use of force under Chapter 7 of the founding U.N. Charter. The remaining 13 members voted in favor.

Kenya stepped forward in July with a pledge of 1,000 police. The Bahamas then committed 150 people, while Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda are also willing to help.

Foreign Affairs Minister Alfred Mutua has said he hopes Kenyan police officers will arrive in Haiti by January, but authorities from the East African country have shared few additional details about the mission.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kenyan President William Ruto said his country's participation in peacekeeping missions around the world had prepared it to lead the force in Haiti.

🇰🇪 On the mass unrest in Kenya

Since June 20th, there have been daily protests in Kenya with thousands of people participating.

The reason for the protests was the government's proposal to introduce additional fees on basic goods such as bread, vegetable oil and sugar in order to overcome the budget deficit. These measures caused understandable unrest across the country, as the population is already struggling to make ends meet, and additional taxes will only exacerbate the situation.

▪️On June 20th, protests in the Kenyan capital Nairobi and other major cities gathered thousands of people, against whom the police used tear gas and, as reported, live ammunition. During the suppression of the rallies, 1 protester was killed and another 200 were injured.

Soon after, the parliament decided to revise the budget amendments on June 25th. For this same day, the opposition planned large-scale protests, which are now unfolding and have already resulted in the storming of government buildings.

▪️Meanwhile, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura suspected foreign powers of sponsoring the protests. In the same speech, he mentioned that the current president Ruto could have made statements that displeased other people.

In particular, he reminded of the Kenyan leader's participation in the Ukrainian peace summit in Switzerland. Thus, he indirectly accused the Russian leadership of instigating the protests.

▪️Also, some Western observers note the appearance of the Russian flag at the protests, which does not indicate the presence of instigators from Russia. Recently, the tricolor has become a symbol of protest against the West on the African continent, and in the logic of rallies directed against the government, its appearance is quite appropriate.

🔻The reaction of the Kenyan officials shows how the Western press has influenced the local government. Now all the problems within the country can be conveniently attributed to the cursed Russians, instead of seeing the beam in their own eye. And it's understandable: just the other day, Kenya became the main non-NATO ally of the USA, and the new status obliges a certain politeness on a whole range of foreign policy issues.

🇨🇳🇰🇪🌍 How China-Africa infrastructure deals shape Kenya's economic landscape

Over the past few years, the outcomes of China-Africa infrastructure partnerships have become visible across the African continent.

More than 50 heads of state, including Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto, are in Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation taking place from September 4.

The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a key project of the Belt and Road Initiative, has positively influenced Kenya's economic and social growth. By the end of May 2024, the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR had moved 2.684 million standard containers and 32.87 million metric tons of cargo.

It also facilitated the transport of 12.87 million passengers. Over the last seven years, the SGR has created over 74,000 jobs in Kenya and trained more than 2,800 professionals.

This project contributes around 2 percent to Kenya's GDP growth.
