Whatβs happening?
When youβre asleep, especially during deeper stages of sleep, your brain reduces responsiveness to many external stimuli. The neural pathways involved in triggering a sneeze become much less active, making sneezing during sleep extremely unlikely. If something irritates your nose enough, youβre more likely to wake up first and then sneeze.
Fun twist: People can cough in their sleep sometimes, but sneezing is much rarer because of how the sneeze reflex is regulated by the brain.
