Element-free Galerkin (EFG) is a pseudo meshless simulation method. In contrast to classical FEA, the simulation model can handle large deformations. By additionally incorporating re-meshing, the model can sustain even larger deformations.
In classical Finite Element Analysis (#FEA), the method relies on meshing, and with large deformations, the mesh can become distorted, requiring remeshing. In contrast, the Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method does not use traditional meshing and instead uses scattered points to define shapes, making it more suitable for handling large deformations. #Abaqus does not natively support EFG but can be implemented through user-defined subroutines (like UEL).
This example is part of the "Metal Forming in Ansys" course.
