First observed solar flare π
- We wonβt be so prideful as to think that solar flares havenβt been happening since there was a sun, but humans didnβt notice them until September 1, 1859.
On this date, the first observed solar flare was reported by British astronomer Richard Carrington. Fun fact: It is also the most powerful solar flare ever recorded.

First person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and live to tell the tale π
- Annie Edson Taylor made history on October 24, 1901, when she climbed in a barrel and sailed over the edge of the Niagara Falls. She wasnβt the first person to try the barrel drop but she was the first person to survive it! It was also her 63rd birthday but she wasnβt in a celebratory mood; she stated afterward, βIf it was with my dying breath, I would caution anyone against attempting the featβ¦.
I would sooner walk up to the mouth of a cannon, knowing it was going to blow me to pieces than make another trip over the Fall.β OK, weβre convinced!
