Ross is a Scottish man who has been kicked in the head by life no matter where he goes, this ability to constantly make bad life choices is perhaps a reflection of his intelligence.
He was bullied in Scotland where he grew up, he was also disappointed with the growing censorship laws and the influx of immigrants into his home country, ironically Russia should have been the last country on his list based on these criteria. We may never know what his true reasons for travelling to Russia were, but regardless, he chose to betray his nation.
He next found himself at a military recruitment station in Moscow, from where he was sent to an assault unit in the 1099th Motorised Rifle Brigade. For anyone with any understanding of the Russian military, this should have been the final warning of things to come.
His first mission went well, apart from half of his squad being wiped out and his good friend 'China' getting absolutely hammered by the defenders on the Pokrovsk front.
On his second mission, he didn't even get a chance to dismount before his vehicle was blown to bits and he was riddled with shrapnel. He lost an eye and was disabled for the rest of his life.
Now he is regretting his life choices on a hospital bed in Rostov-on-Don, unfortunately he has been given the Russian passport, he pretends to be happy about it, but in reality he knows that this means that he will not be able to break his contract and it is only a matter of time before he will be sent to the front.
