🤬An evaluation has found Dekarlos Brown, murderer of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, mentally unfit to stand trial.

Brown is being prosecuted at both the state level in North Carolina and the federal level, where he could face the death penalty.

His lawyer argues that while Brown is held in federal custody, it is impossible to carry out the competency procedures required under state law. The defense is therefore requesting that a key court hearing scheduled for April 30 be postponed by six months.

Legal experts note that findings of incompetence to stand trial are not uncommon in cases involving serious mental health issues. However, this does not mean the defendant will be released.

In such situations, defendants are typically sent to a psychiatric facility, where doctors may attempt to restore their competency.

▪️ Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed on August 22, 2025, at a light rail station in Charlotte. The suspect’s sister later shared a recording of a conversation that took place six days after his arrest. In it, he claimed that the "government had implanted foreign materials" in his brain that controlled his actions. He said he killed Zarutska because she was "reading his thoughts."
