Hundreds of millions of honeybees are mysteriously dying in the United States… and beekeepers don’t know why. What’s happening is alarming because it could have serious consequences for agriculture and many of the foods that end up on our tables.
Tom Babcock, a beekeeper with more than a decade of experience, says he’s never seen anything this serious. “I’ve been doing this since 2010, and I’ve never seen such a huge loss,” he says. His colleague Laura Pascarella, with anguish on her face, shares her fears: hives that were strong and healthy a month ago are now empty.
And it’s not just honey we’re talking about. We’re talking about a potential silent food crisis. Bees pollinate 75 percent of the fruits, nuts, and vegetables in the United States. We’re talking about a crop worth nearly $15 billion. If the bees disappear, so does the food that depends on them.
