A Russian suicide drone struck the priceless Bernardine Church in Lviv today and set it on fire.

The three-nave stone basilica built during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth between the years 1600-1630 and is renowned for its impressive Flemish-style Mannerist façade designed by Andrzej Bemer.

Stone-clad with Tuscan pilasters, strapwork ornamentation and sculptural details, it stands as a fine example of late Renaissance design on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s south-eastern frontier.

The church was funded by leading magnate families such as the Mniszechs, Sieniawskis, Żółkiewskis and Zamoyskis.

In 1663, it witnessed Jan Świderski apologizing to the future King John III Sobieski on behalf of a military confederation.

Its interior was later enriched with Baroque frescoes by Benedykt Mazurkiewicz, notably the “Triumph of St. Francis,” along with 17 ornate altars.

After annexing the city from Poland in 1945, the Soviets closed the church in 1945 as part of their war on the Roman Catholic Church.

In 1991, it was reopened under the care of Ukrainian Greek Catholic Basilian Order and has undergone thorough renovation. It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
