WICHITA, Kansas

An overnight train derailment in north Wichita is forcing NB drivers on I-135 to take another route.

At around midnight, Union Pacific says approximately 10 railcars derailed under the I-135 bridge in Wichita.

As of 9:00 a.m. Saturday, the NB lanes of I-135 closed from 21st St to EB K-96.

Early reports suggested the train derailment damaged multiple pillars under the road.

Wichita City Councilmember Joseph Shepard says 2 pillars on I-135 were damaged.

According to Union Pacific, no spills, hazardous materials, or injuries are involved.

Union Pacific says the incident is still under investigation, and it is working closely with the Kansas DOT to determine the next steps for bridge repairs.
