Did Dog-Headed Soldiers Fight in 16th-Century European Religious Wars?

If you study the battles of the French Wars of Religion, such as the Battle of Moncontour (1569) or the Battle of Dreux (1562), one recurring detail in the illustrations immediately catches the eye.
In depictions of these battles in manuscripts and illuminations, two formations stand out: one human, and one surprisingly… with dog heads.

Chronicles, military reports, and later historiography, show no evidence of “dog-headed” soldiers. Armies were made up of French nobles, German Landsknechts, Swiss mercenaries, royal troops, and Huguenot units.

Yet, despite this, they appear in illustrations.
Why would such figures be depicted in books about battles?

One logical explanation could be propaganda. During the religious wars, opponents might have been depicted as “beasts” or “inhuman,” to demean their appearance or justify aggression against them.

Another possibility is allegory; artists often used animals to symbolically represent the enemy. But does that really fit here?

There’s an intriguing complication: in some depictions, the coats of arms and unit insignia linked to the dog-headed figures match real military formations. (Löffelholz Codex 16th century)

If this was purely the artist’s imagination, why were these symbols linked to actual heraldry?

If there is even a grain of truth in this, could Dog-Headed soldiers have actually served? And if so, were they allied with the Angevins, Swiss mercenaries, Huguenots, or another mysterious faction?
