BREAKING: Newly released footage shows a Florida trans teen, accused of shooting her mother and her mother’s boyfriend over misgendering her.
In 2024, Julia Egler, who was 16 at the time of the incident, fatally shot her mother, Kelley McCollom, before turning the same firearm on her mother’s boyfriend, Matthew Szejnrok. After shooting her mother, Egler fired at Szejnrok and then attacked him with a knife. Both victims died from their injuries.
Officials say the violence followed ongoing tensions in the home, reportedly centered around disagreements related to Egler’s gender identity.
Egler was indicted on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder. She would be tried as an adult, but she is not eligible for the death penalty based on Florida statute and the US Supreme Court, and will face life in prison if convicted.
