Two massive oarfish were filmed gliding side by side near the surface off Sakai City in Fukui Prefecture, Japan—an extraordinarily rare and chilling sight. These deep-sea giants, known scientifically as Regalecus glesne, typically dwell 200 to 1,000 meters below the ocean, far from human view. Often called the “Doomsday Fish,” or “Ryugu no tsukai” in Japanese folklore, they are believed to be messengers from the Sea God’s Palace, said to appear before natural disasters. The legend gained global attention after sightings preceded the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. Though scientists find no proven link, the sudden rise of these 30-foot sea serpents from the abyss remains haunting. When the ocean’s deepest secrets surface, it leaves one unsettling question—what drove them upward?
