UPDATES | The United States has confirmed that the U.S. warship and Coast Guard vessels anchored in the Bay of Port-au-Prince are conducting a security mission under Operation Southern Spear, a broader U.S. military campaign across the Caribbean.

The USS Stockdale is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer equipped for multi-domain operations, including air and surface defense, anti-submarine warfare, and long-range strike capabilities. Its deployment in the Caribbean has been tied to counter-narcotics and security efforts, replacing other naval assets in the region and enhancing maritime patrol capacity.

Supporting the destroyer are two U.S. Coast Guard cutters with law-enforcement and interdiction roles. The USCGC Stone is a Legend-class national security cutter designed for extended patrols, maritime law enforcement, and high-endurance missions such as drug interdiction and search and rescue. 

The USCGC Diligence is a Reliance-class medium endurance cutter, suited for a range of Coast Guard tasks including counter-drug operations, maritime security, and enforcement of U.S. law at sea.

Operation Southern Spear, launched in 2025, is an ongoing United States military and surveillance effort under U.S. Southern Command aimed at detecting, disrupting, and degrading transnational criminal and illicit maritime networks throughout the Caribbean and wider region. The operation has involved a significant buildup of naval and Coast Guard assets in the area and includes patrols, intelligence gathering, and cooperative efforts with partner nations to reduce the flow of illegal drugs and other illicit activity.

U.S. officials have emphasized that the current deployment near Haiti is a security-focused mission tied to these broader objectives, rather than a combat or occupation operation, underscoring Washington’s stated commitment to maritime security and stability in the region •
