20 Garden Jobs Before Winter’s Come ❄️
❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️ ❄️
1. Harvest remaining cold-hardy crops—kale, leeks, carrots, parsnips, Brussels sprouts. Lift roots that won’t overwinter in frozen soil.
2. Pull spent annuals and exhausted veg plants. Remove completely to cut off overwintering pests and disease.
3. Finish collecting and labeling seeds from hardy flowers and vegetables. Dry fully before storing.
4. Mulch all bare beds heavily with compost, leaf mould, or straw to insulate soil and protect structure.
5. Top up mulch around perennials, roses, and shrubs, keeping it off crowns and stems.
6. Cut back herbaceous perennials that have collapsed. Leave sturdy stems and seedheads for birds and frost protection.
7. Protect tender perennials with fleece, straw collars, or evergreen boughs.
8. Lift and store any remaining tender bulbs and tubers—dahlias, cannas, begonias—before deep freeze.
9. Heel in young trees, shrubs, or bare-root plants not yet planted, or get them in the ground immediately if soil is workable.
10. Check tree stakes, ties, and guards. Secure against winter wind and rodent damage.
11. Wrap young tree trunks with guards or mesh to prevent rabbit and vole damage.
12. Drain hoses, irrigation lines, and outdoor taps fully to prevent freeze damage.
13. Empty, clean, and store ceramic and terracotta pots. Raise large containers off bare ground.
14. Move hardy potted plants to sheltered positions; group containers together for insulation.
15. Final lawn tidy: rake debris, avoid cutting too short, stay off frozen or saturated turf.
16. Turn compost one last time if unfrozen; cap piles with straw or cardboard to retain heat.
17. Feed birds with high-energy food and keep water sources ice-free where possible.
18. Clean, sharpen, oil, and store all tools. Remove soil to prevent rust and rot.
19. Sweep and organize greenhouse, shed, and cold frames. Ventilate on mild days to prevent mould.
20. Walk the garden deliberately. Note drainage issues, wind tunnels, winter sun paths, and failures to correct in spring.
