3I/ATLAS is behaving in a way astronomers have never seen before.

As of December 15, 2025, 3I/ATLAS is about 270 million kilometers from Earth. By December 19, it will be slightly closer — but not enough to explain what telescopes are now seeing. New images reveal a massive “anti-tail” — a stream of material stretching half a million kilometers toward the Sun. 🚨 Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS Behaves Unlike Normal Comets

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb says 3I/ATLAS is displaying an unusual sun-facing anti-tail that may not be explained by a simple viewing-angle effect, unlike what is seen in ordinary comets.

Recent observations suggest this anti-tail is enormous — stretching hundreds of thousands of kilometers, potentially longer than the distance between Earth and the Moon. Such a scale makes a purely geometric illusion less likely.

This strengthens the possibility that the feature is real and intrinsic to the object itself, perhaps caused by unusual dust release, non-standard particle dynamics, or an as-yet unknown physical process.

If confirmed, this behavior would place 3I/ATLAS among the most anomalous interstellar objects ever observed, challenging existing models of cometary physics.

NASA Finds MAVEN Rotating Unusually During Last Contact

NASA has lost contact with the MAVEN spacecraft while it was orbiting Mars, and recovery efforts are ongoing after the signal went silent in early December. Engineers have not received normal spacecraft data since then and are still trying to reestablish communication.

A brief tracking signal later showed that MAVEN may have been rotating in an unexpected way, suggesting the spacecraft could be spinning or tumbling, and its orbit may have changed.

To keep Mars missions running, NASA is using other orbiters—Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Odyssey, and ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter—to relay communications, allowing the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers to continue their science work.
