Big news coming out today in the FBI’s efforts to rid the U.S. of Foreign Terrorist Organizations…

Two new groups now fall under the FTO designation—Los Choneros and Los Lobos. Both are criminal organizations based in Ecuador that are responsible for significant drug and firearms trafficking and acts of extreme violence.
 
The FBI, along with our partners within the newly established Homeland Security Task Force, played a crucial role in helping get this designation by providing critical intelligence to support. You may remember, the leader of the Los Choneros, José Adolfo “Fito” Macías Villamar, was extradited to Brooklyn in July to face international drug and gun charges. These groups being added to this designation reinforces our commitment to disrupting terrorist networks and protecting our nation.
 
This will allow the FBI and our partners to continue to strike at violent groups that exploit the drug trade to fund operations and push dangerous drugs into the American communities. We WILL cut off their resources and reduce their ability to harm people both here at home and abroad.
