The U.S. State Department has reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for Antarctica.

There are four levels for international travel advisories: Level 1 (“exercise normal precautions”), Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”), Level 3 (“reconsider travel”) and Level 4 (“do not travel”).

On July 28, 2025, they advised travelers to exercise increased caution due to extreme and unpredictable weather, including the deteriorating Thwaites Glacier, known as the "doomsday glacier," which could significantly impact global sea levels if it melts.

The advisory highlights limited emergency services and recommends travel insurance, professional guides, or self-sufficiency with medical evacuation coverage for private expeditions.

Tourism has risen sharply, with 80,455 visitors in the 2024-2025 season, a 44% increase from 2019-2020, raising concerns about ecological impacts, particularly on penguin habitats, as human presence continues to grow.

Antarctic Base Assault Update: Sanae IV Scientists Won't Be Rescued

There are no plans to rescue a South African research team isolated at a base in Antarctica over claims a team member has become violent, the country has said.

Mbelengwa previously said: "The department is engaging with the professional that undertook the psychometric evaluation, to have the overwinterers reassessed and to assist with coping mechanisms during their time at the base, inclusive of conflict resolution strategies, interpersonal skills improvement as well as overall counseling and support."

What Happens Next:
It seems the South African scientists will remain at Sanae IV until the end of their mission—unless anything changes in relation to the government's investigation.
