Joan Anderson, the woman who helped invent the hula hoop, has died aged 101.

It was on a visit to her native Australia in 1956 when Joan saw groups of people swivelling wooden hoops around their waists.

As the craze grew, she bought one when she returned to the US - and helped to coin its name, the hula hoop.

It went on to sell millions and became a global sensation - but for years, her and her husband went uncredited for their role in its rise.
