A fire at the Waltloo Substation in Tshwane early Thursday morning caused widespread power outages across multiple areas, with restoration timelines still unknown as assessments continue.

According to Tshwane Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo some areas in Tshwane are without electricity following a fire incident at the 132kv Waltloo Substation.

“The Waltloo Transformer 1B caught fire just after midnight. This incident led to power trips to the supply areas of the Rooiwal, Pyramid, Phumulani, Waltloo, and Koedoespoort substations, which are currently experiencing power outages.”

A major industrial fire broke out around 5:24 pm April 24 at the Abilities Group recycling plant on Hillside Road in Wairau Valley, located on Auckland’s North Shore.

36 Fire and Emergency NZ appliances and other specialist vehicles attended the inferno.

“There are lithium-ion batteries in the fire inside the plant and the fire continues to produce toxic smoke.

We continue to urge people living nearby to stay inside and keep their windows closed. There is no immediate need to evacuate unless advised to do so.”

Uruapan, Mexico

An unusual phenomenon went viral in Uruapan, Michoacán, which show the moment when steam emanates from the ground, as well as boiling water for no apparent reason.

Residents fear that "a new volcano" is forming in the area, so they requested the intervention of specialists and authorities.

The events were recorded in an avocado garden located in La Quebradora, where local workers noticed an area with high temp on the ground & an approx diameter of 8 meters.

First it was thought that it was an underground fire because of the hot air that raised dust, but when it threw water at it, it boiled at the moment, with which the presence of superficial fire was ruled out.

The CP of Michoacán, the UMSNH & the UNAM visited the site. “From April 24, we will carry out studies on site with an interdisciplinary team of experts in geophysics and Earth sciences.”

DW Fire say there is an underground fire in the area, and electricity engineers are on scene.

They advise people avoid the area where possible.

Cenrana, Indonesia

A sinkhole appeared on the Maros-Bone axis road, precisely in Labuaja Hamlet, Cenrana District, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi (Sulsel).

The 10 meter deep sinkhole was first seen by residents at night.

"The hole appeared in the middle of the night. We have measured, the depth is about 8 to 10 meters. The surface is small, but the inside is much wider, around 5 to 6 meters," said Labuaja Village Head, Asdar to reporters, Thursday (4/24/2025).
