Apple has reportedly been ordered by the UK government to create a backdoor that would give security officials access to usersโ€™ encrypted iCloud backups. If implemented, British security services would have access to the backups of any user worldwide, not just Brits, and Apple would not be permitted to alert users that their encryption was compromised.

The Washington Post reports that the secret order, issued last month, is based on rights given under the UKโ€™s Investigatory Powers Act of 2016, also known as the Snoopersโ€™ Charter. Officials have apparently demanded blanket access to end-to-end encrypted files uploaded by any user worldwide, rather than access to a specific account.

Appleโ€™s iCloud backups arenโ€™t encrypted by default, but the Advanced Data Protection option was added in 2022, and must be enabled manually. It uses end-to-end encryption so that not even Apple can access encrypted files. In response to the order, Apple is expected to simply stop offering Advanced Data Protection in the UK. This wouldnโ€™t meet the UKโ€™s demand for access to files shared by global users, however.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has disbanded a task force established to target Russian oligarchs following the invasion of Ukraine, arguing that resources need to be shifted to focus on the administration's anti-cartel efforts.

Biden
established Task Force KleptoCapture and the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative to punish Russian oligarchs in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This empowered the U.S. to seize valuable assets, such as yachts worth $120 million, personal airplanes and funds based in the West.

However, President Donald Trump made it a top priority to hit Mexican cartels and criminal activity along and involving the southern border of the U.S.

To that end, Trump signed an executive order designating the cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO), equating the criminal organizations to groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda and broadening the legal tools available to undermine them.

Russell Vought takes office as President Donald Trumpโ€™s budget chief today with the goal of turning the federal bureaucracy into rubble. But his work has already started.

The administrationโ€™s early moves to fire thousands of federal workers and dismantle entire agencies even before Vought took office reflect his influence at the White House. They also illuminate the depths of his detailed plan for fundamentally reshaping the foundations of American government.

Trump has issued reams of executive orders and actions in his frenzied 19 days in office โ€” including those axing civil service protections for federal workers, freezing the hiring of new federal employees and mandating a line-by-line review of federal spending to ensure no dollars are going toward diversity, equity and inclusion programs and other causes antithetical to his agenda.

The orders have the incoming Office of Management and Budget directorโ€™s fingerprints all over them and align with Trumpโ€™s broader goal of tearing down a federal โ€œdeep stateโ€ he believes worked to stymie his agenda during his first term, Trump insiders and those close to Vought say.

In a vote on Friday, lawmakers passed the "Protecting American Energy Production Act" to prohibit the president from "declaring a moratorium on the use of hydraulic fracturing unless Congress authorizes the moratorium."

There were 118 Democrats who voted against the legislation, while Republican House members unanimously voted in favor of its passage.

The bill comes after former President Joe Biden enacted several regulations on oil and gas during his term, including banning future oil and gas drilling along 625 million acres of coastal and offshore waters just weeks before he left office.
