FAYETTE, Missouri

Bricks from the back corner of the I. H. Pearson Dry Goods building located at 105 North Main St on the east side of the Fayette square collapsed sometime Monday afternoon, prompting the city to close off the alley behind the block of buildings.

The 2-story building has been unoccupied for several years. It is mostly remembered as the location of the former I.G.A. grocery store.

Fayette Mayor Greg Stidham said the city is searching for a structural engineer to inspect the building.

Progreso, Yucatan - Mexico

A worker was killed yesterday after the collapse of a 20 meter crane. The machine was being operated when it suddenly leaned sideways and landed on a makeshift shed.

According to preliminary reports, a boom crane was carrying out maneuvers when, due to its weight, it tilted and fell. The boom, which was extended approximately 20 meters, collapsed on a sheet metal workshop.

Several workers were under the metal structure at the time of the accident. One of them died on scene while another suffered various injuries. Others managed to get out on their own unhurt.

Civil Protection personnel from Progreso arrived to assess the on-site company accident. Details surrounding how the crane fell over were not provided.

Nagoya, Japan

A 2-meter-wide sinkhole emerged on a road in Nagoya, central Japan, on Thursday morning, leaving a car stuck but no one injured, local authorities said.

Police received an emergency call at around 7:50 a.m. from the car driver in his 30s who said the front wheels of his car had fallen into a hole after the road caved in. The sinkhole was about 1.5 meters in depth, according to local authorities.

Construction work to replace a water pipe was underway nearby, and the authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, suspecting a hollow emerged underneath the site.
