You never know when an earthquake can strike on the New Madrid Seismic Zone, the most volatile & dangerous fault system in the country.

Only a handful of quakes large enough to be felt have occurred over the past decade in Arkansas. That helps build the general complacency.

Still, the USGS predicts that there’s a 25%-40% chance of a 6.0-mag earthquake along the seismic zone within the next 50 years.

A 6.0-mag quake would cause “quite a bit of damage.” Cell phone towers would come down. Roads could be destroyed. Older buildings could collapse. Electricity would be knocked out.

“People need to be ready. This area doesn’t look like what you’d expect earthquake country to look like. You don’t have the mountains like in California or the valleys in Utah. It’s all under the Delta soil here.

Earthquakes can happen anywhere. We don’t know where faults are until they are active. There’s no warning. They just happen.”

FRANKLIN CO., Missouri

Loud booms recently heard in multiple St. Louis-region communities may have been caused by a sudden temp drop, according to 5 On Your Side’s Weather Team.

“Frost quakes" was a likely culprit for loud popping sounds heard in Franklin Co & surrounding areas on Sunday.

Meteorologist Jim Castillo said the 30+ deg temp drop over the weekend set the perfect conditions for a frost quake to occur.

"As water freezes, it expands, creating pressure on surrounding soil & rock. This pressure eventually causes cracks to form, which can produce a sudden popping or cracking noise, resembling the sound of a small earthquake. However, unlike earthquakes, frost quakes are harmless & very weak, releasing significantly less energy than an earthquake."

The last time the St. Louis region had confirmed frost quakes was over 10 yrs ago.

The coldest air of the winter is about to descend across the United States, and the upcoming Arctic express could set off loud booms that feel like earthquakes.

These events, known as frost quakes, occur when plummeting temperatures cause water in the ground to freeze. As the ice expands, stress builds up in the ground, and when the pressure becomes too great, the ground gives way, creating a loud pop and rumble similar to an earthquake.

This week's Arctic blast will send sub-freezing temperatures reaching as far south as the Gulf Coast states, which could set off frost quakes in areas that rarely experience the phenomenon.

Despite being similar to earthquakes, they are not related to the movement of tectonic plates. As a result, frost quakes are localized events with a smaller risk of damage than earthquakes.
