‘Third man syndrome’ refers to a psychological phenomenon in which individuals in extreme situations such as near-death experiences, intense physical or psychological stress, and periods of isolation report sensing the presence of an additional, often unseen, companion or entity providing support, guidance, or comfort. This experience is commonly reported by climbers, explorers, and survivors of traumatic events, who describe feeling as though there is someone else with them, even when they are alone.
