Vatnajökull, Iceland

More than 130 earthquakes were registered Tuesday at Iceland's large Bardarbunga volcano, a possible precursor to an eruption among the several scenarios being considered.

The aviation color code over the area has been changed from green to yellow as a precaution, the met office said, but the volcano's remote location in the heart of southern Iceland's uninhabited highlands means no infrastructure is at risk.

The series of seismic events lasted for about 3 hours before subsiding slightly.

"Earthquakes continue to be detected in the area and it is too early to say whether the swarm will fade away.”

The largest earthquake registered a 5.1 mag, while 17 other earthquakes with a mag of 3 or higher were detected, including at least 2 measuring mag 4 or above.

The met office said the earthquakes were "consistent with increased inflation due to magma accumulation" under Bardarbunga.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, California

Orange Co Beaches from Treasure Island to Table Rock remained closed to the public until further notice due to a sewage spill in Laguna Beach, officials said Tuesday.

The spill was caused by a sewer line that ruptured at Laguna Niguel Regional Park, representatives for Orange Co Supervisor Katrina Foley said Tuesday evening.

The pipe was repaired, but about 465,000 gallons of wastewater wound up leaking into the ocean.

Affected beaches will be temporarily off limits to swimmers, surfers and divers until the Orange Co Health Care Agency determines it’s safe to go back into the water.
