Verviers, Belgium

The firefighters of the Vesdre Hoëgne Plateau area intervened this Saturday in the late afternoon at the Crescend'eau site, in Verviers west, after it was found that the ground was unstable in the LolaLiza and Marques shops to follow.

The slab on which the 2 buildings rest suddenly cracked over about 40 meters, in the same direction. The tile cracked, causing a striking noise.

These 2 stores therefore had to be closed as a precautionary measure, pending the arrival of a stability engineer, to assess the danger.

It is possible that the instability is due to the presence of an old embankment on a site that had formerly housed the Verviers-ouest station, before the west-east connection was made under the Chic-Chac hill and via the current Verviers central station.

Coquitlam, BC - Canada

A major explosion at a Coquitlam strip mall early Sunday morning has left the building in tatters.

The blast at 341 North Rd. near Lougheed Highway blew out the entire front facing of the mall.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. John Graham said Coquitlam Fire Rescue Services called its officers shortly before 6:30 a.m. about a fire.

He said police helped with traffic management and closed the road for hours on Sunday morning, but it has fully reopened.

Police and the FD will investigate, but Graham said it is too early to speculate about a cause. He said no injuries have been reported.
