GARY, Indiana
Sunday night shortly before 10 PM, a Norfolk Southern train carrying tanker cars of what is believed to be holding Ethanol derailed in Gary bw the mills and Buffington Harbor. (430 N Clark Rd) This area of tracks is known as Pine Junction, according to radio traffic.
Approximately 8-10 tanker cars came off the tracks for an unknown reason. At this time at least one of those tankers was leaking Ethanol.
Gary FD is on standby at the scene and an outside hazmat team was called in to clean up around 2:30 AM.
A transfer of materials from those tankers and into other tanks is currently being handled. Equipment to clean up the derailed cars is enroute.
There is no threat to the area at this time however local train traffic in that area has been stopped including Amtrak train 355 which was stopped at Michigan City. Those passengers will be bussed to Union Station.

A derailment has sent rail cars carrying grain plunging into the Fraser River, and CN Rail says it’s working to restore the tracks near Boston Bar, B.C.
It says the incident involving about a dozen cars from a CPKC train on its mainline east of the Fraser Canyon community happened on Sunday due to a rockslide.
The transport company says “no injuries, fires or dangerous goods” were involved in the derailment and crews worked through the night to safely clear the area, removing rocks and debris.
CN Rail says crews are now working to restore the track and resume train traffic by Monday afternoon.
But it says cleanup of the derailed cars and grain will continue “over the coming days and weeks.”

The Los Angeles Co FD responded to reports of a derailed train in Carson Monday afternoon.
Union Pacific said 4 locomotives and 5 rail cars derailed near Carson St and Alameda St around 1 p.m.
"There were no injuries or releases of contents reported," said Mike Jaixon, Union Pacific senior communications manager.
