4 earthquakes were recorded in SE Missouri (New Madrid County) on Monday morning, Dec 9.

According to the USGS, the first one was recorded around 12:08 a.m. about 8 km E-SE of Matthews. It was recorded as a 2.2 mag eq with a depth of 19.2 km.

At around 12:27 a.m., the USGS reports a 2.7 mag eq was recorded about 4 km west of Howardville, Mo. It had a depth of 7.9 km.

The next earthquake, a 2.1 mag was recorded about 4 km W-SW of Howardville. It happened around 4:27 a.m., according to the preliminary USGS report.

Lastly, a 2.2 mag was recorded around 7:30 a.m. about 1 km north of Marston.

Ciudad Piar, Venezuela

On the afternoon of this Sun, Dec 8th, a derailment occurred in Ferrominera del Orinoco railroad near Ciudad Piar in the Angostura municipality, Bolívar State, in the south of the country.

According to what was reported by a worker who for security reasons preferred not to be identified, the unit had to be diverted in an emergency to one of the 2 escape shunts that exist and resulted in the derailment.

“The process is still under investigation but the railroad operations crews of Ciudad Piar comment that they are driving down (the hill) too many wagons with only 2 engines, and that does not provide security, apart from the fact that in the wagons many brake shoes are crystallized and they (the government company) do not do the corrective maintenance to the wagons”.

AVONDALE, Louisiana

Jefferson Parish officials ordered a brief evacuation near Hwy 90 & Avondale Garden Rd, after a suspicious odor was reported in the area this afternoon.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is assisting with the evacuation as crews respond. Initial reports indicated 11 people were evacuated from 8 residences.

The initial call about the possible gas leak came in around 1 p.m. Residents near the location were instructed to leave the area while first responders worked to address the leak.

This incident comes exactly one week after a deadly home explosion at the same intersection, about half of a block away.

Jefferson Parish authorities have not yet released details on the cause of this latest leak.
