Mako Nishimura is widely described as the only woman believed to have formally joined the yakuza as a full member. In profile reporting, she says she earned respect in that world through violence and later claimed, “I never lost a fight against a man.”

Reports say she entered that life when she was young, spent about three decades in it, served prison time, and carried the physical marks of yakuza life long after trying to leave. When she attempted to rebuild, her tattoos and missing fingertip reportedly made ordinary work and reintegration extremely difficult.

Asia Business Daily reports that she turned her back on the yakuza in 2012 and now works with Gojinkai, a nonprofit that helps former offenders and former gang members avoid reoffending and find a way back into society.
