A van driver in East Kent has earned unexpected hero status after becoming an unofficial getaway driver… for the police.

Officers from Kent Police were called to a property on the High Street just after midday on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, following reports of a serious assault. But by the time patrols arrived, the suspect had already decided cardio was the best defence and bolted on foot.

As officers gave chase, a passing van driver spotted the sprinting armed officer and did what any reasonable person would do—pulled over and shouted, “Get in the back!”

The quick-thinking motorist gave the officer a lift mid-pursuit, turning an ordinary van into a temporary police response vehicle.

Kent Police have since thanked the driver and recommended him for a commendation. Not every hero wears a cape—some drive a van and have excellent timing.
