How to Catch a Swarm – Super Easy Method!

Today we caught our fifth swarm of the year! Unlike the last few, this one landed on a low, easy-to-reach branch on our walnut tree. Here’s the simple technique we use to get them safely into a box and back into the yard.  You’ll need a box (nuc or deep hive body) with frames and at least one frame of drawn comb (even better if it has some brood)

Step-by-Step

Set up the box

Place your box with the frames directly underneath the swarm. Use a ladder, stand, or anything that gets the box as close as possible to the cluster. If the box can actually touch the bees, they’ll often start walking right in on their own.

Get the bees into the box

If the box can’t touch them, gently shake the branch or cut it so the bees fall straight into the box. They’ll be happy to land on the drawn comb.

Let them settle

Give the bees a few minutes to orient themselves. If any are still hanging on the branch, give it another gentle shake until they all drop in.

Make sure the queen is secure

The most important part is getting the queen into the box. Once she’s in, the rest of the bees will follow shortly.

Move and feed

Once the bees are settled in the box, move it to where you want the new hive to stay.
Feed them right away with sugar water (1:1 ratio). They’ll drink it fast and start building their new home.

That’s it! Super straightforward when the swarm is on a low branch.Pro tip: Drawn comb + a frame with brood makes the box extremely attractive to the swarm.
