🎭A dog, a toy, and a court case: AI reworked a photo — and it's completely legal

A story straight out of our niche: a photographer shoots underwater dog portraits (yes, that’s actually a thing). One of her shots — a dog diving for a red toy — was run through AI by a former partner, who turned it into a comic-style image and posted it on his website.

The photographer sued. And lost. The Supreme Court of Germany ruled that converting someone else’s photo into a cartoon image using AI does not constitute copyright infringement.

💬The logic: the law protects specific photographic choices — framing, angle, lighting, and depth of field. But the idea of a "dog reaching for a toy underwater" itself? Not protected. Since the AI altered the composition and style, the original protected elements weren't technically copied.
