๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Naji al-Ali | Palestine Diary

"The child #Handala is my signature, everyone asks me about him wherever I go. His name is Handala and he has promised the people that he will remain true to himself. I drew him as a child who is not beautiful, his hair is like the hair of a hedgehog who uses his thorns as a weapon. Handala is not a fat, happy, relaxed, or pampered child, he is barefooted like the refugee camp children.

Handala was born ten years old, and he will always be ten years old. At that age I left my homeland, and when he returns, Handala will still be ten, and then he will start growing up. The laws of nature do not apply to him. He is unique. Things will become normal again when the homeland returns. I presented him to the poor and named him Handala as a symbol of bitterness. At first he was a Palestinian child, but his consciousness developed to have a national and then a global and human horizon.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Naji al-Ali was one of the most prominent cartoonists in the Arab world. Sarcastic, poignant and perhaps too bold, al-Aliโ€™s cartoons were drawn from his experience as a Palestinian refugee since childhood and clearly reflected his political stance, which was often critical of the Arab regimes.

The following extracts are drawn from an interview with Radwa Ashour, novelist and professor of English literature at Ain Shams University, during the summer of 1984 in Budapest.. It was published in the periodical Al Muwagaha in 1985, only two years before al-Ali was assassinated in London in 1987 at the age of 50.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ UNOSAT Gaza Strip Agricultural Damage Assessment - November 2023

The decline in the health and density of the crops can be observed due to the impact of activities such as razing, heavy vehicle tracking, bombing, shelling, and other conflict-related dynamics. The analysis takes into account the damage that affects both active crop fields, fallow lands, and a multitude of household gardens. UNOSAT analysis shows that the agricultural extent in the Gaza Strip is estimated to be 185 sq. km, accounting for approximately 50% of the total area of Gaza. Compared to the average of the previous 6 years, approximately 15% of the arable land in the Gaza Strip has exhibited a significant decline in health and density in November 2023..

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Nearly 85% of Gazaโ€™s residents, almost 1.9 million Palestinians, have been displaced, according to the UN humanitarian office, with cramped living conditions fueling the rapid spread of disease.

Approximately 70% of internally displaced persons are staying at UNRWA shelters, while the rest are in government-run shelters or with host families.

The UN said that Rafah is now hosting the most internally displaced people at a staggering 530,000.

The spread of diseases in Gaza has intensifying as a result of severe overcrowding.

The UN noted reports of #meningitis, #jaundice, #impetigo, #chickenpox and other upper respiratory tract #infections being recorded in Gaza, while the Palestinian health authority had documented 360,000 cases of infectious #diseases in shelters.

The #UN has regularly said that nowhere is safe in #Gaza.

In this unique and emotional episode, PalCast host Dr. Yousef Aljamal and pals Tony Groves and Helena Cobban share memories of Dr. Refaat Alareer, the beloved Gaza teacher and mentor who was killed by Israel on December 7 along with six of his family members.

Yousef, Tony, and Helena speak of the breadth of Refaat's wisdom, humanity, love of literature, and sense of humor, and concluded that he lives on in the rich networks of his mentees, students, and friends that now embrace Gaza and the world. Listen to anecdotes sweet and poignant, some short readings, and a deep appreciation of Refaat's legacy. He is so sadly missed.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Removing symbols of resilience: Israel demolishes Palestinian monuments in Jenin.

Israel has destroyed dozens of statues and monuments, which were built to honour Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.
The most famous was the sculpture of a horse in Jenin, in the Occupied West Bank.
Residents say the structure symbolised the endurance of the Palestinian people.

Al Jazeeraโ€™s Nida Ibrahim reports from Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank

The Jenin Horse, also known by its Arabic name Al-Hissan (The Horse), was a sculpture built in 2003 by the population of Jenin, in the West Bank, along with German artist Thomas Kilpper, made with scrap metal and pieces of wrecked cars that had been destroyed during an Israeli invasion of the city.Among the components of the horse was a large panel from an ambulance.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Israel turns schools into military centres, conducting field executions and mass killings | EuroMed HR Monitor

Geneva - The Israeli army has turned schools sheltering tens of thousands of displaced people into military centres and field execution sites as part of its ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, which began on 7 October, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said on Wednesday.

Euro-Med Monitor received testimonies about Israeli army forces carrying out unjustified field executions and killings of Palestinian civilians after detaining them for days inside the same schools where they had sought refuge from the violence.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Israel Is Wiping Out Gaza's Journalists, A Tribute | MintPress

As a Palestinian-American journalist who has lived under the oppressive shadow of Israeli #occupation and witnessed firsthand the relentless brutality of the #apartheid regime, I cannot remain silent as my people face relentless oppression and violence.

I recently became the recipient of the Women and Media Award from the Women's Institute of the Freedom of the Press. And while it's truly an honor to receive this recognition for the journalism that I direct at MintPress News, it's nearly impossible for me to revel in this accolade when my heart is weighed down heavily by the ongoing turmoil in Gaza.

I want to dedicate this award to the fearless journalists in Gaza who are risking their lives to show us the raw reality of life under Israeli bombs.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Israel's war on Gaza's: Heritage under fire | MEMO

Gaza's ancient Great Omari Mosque is the latest victim of Israel's war on the besieged enclave. Since 7 October 2023, Palestinian archaeological and heritage sites have been targeted by Tel Aviv, over 195 sites have been damaged or destroyed. With death and displacement gripping the besieged enclave, the erasure of heritage is an assault on Palestinian identity and presence on the land
