Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan on the Extremist Murji’ah Who Suspend Outward Rulings Based on Assumed Inward Preventers (Like Ignorance) and Therefore Affirm Outward Islam for Those Who Commit Shirk and Kufr

✍️ STATEMENT:
Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan said:

الثالث : من لم يكفر المشركين أو شك في كفرهم أو صحح مذهبهم كفر.
أو يقول: هؤلاء جهال وقعوا في هذا الأمر عن جهل ويدافع عنهم، فهذا أشد كفرًا منهم، لأنه صحح الكفر وصحح الشرك.

Third: “Whoever does not Takfir the Mushrikīn, or doubts their kufr, or corrects their way, is a Kāfir..."

Or he claims that they are merely ignorant and foolish people who fell into this matter out of ignorance, in doing so he defends them (i.e., by affirming their Islam).

👉 () Then such a person (i.e., the one who excuses them as Muslims) is upon a kufr worse and more severe than they are (i.e., the mushrikin)!

This is because he has approved of kufr, approved of shirk, or shown doubt regarding it (i.e., by withholding the outward ruling and affirming for them Islam).

Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal -رحمه الله - (d. 241 AH) said:

Abū Bakr al-Khallāl mentioned him among the notable companions. He narrated from our Imām (Aḥmad) certain matters. Among them:

Seek closeness to Allah, the Most High, by hating the people of Irjāʾ, for indeed this is one of the most reliable deeds according to us.

The Obligation and Importance of Learning the Nullifiers of Islam

✍️ STATEMENT:
Shaykh al-Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al Wahhab (d. 1206H) said:

“However, if the Muslim comes to know Islam, then it is obligatory upon him to know its nullifiers.

So if the nullifiers of wudu are eight, then it has been mentioned in al-Iqna that the nullifiers of Islam are more than four hundred.”

قال السجزي نكمالّهُ في الرسالة إلى أهل زبيد (ص٣٥٧) :
(الفصل الحادي عشر: في الحذر من الركون إلى كل أحد، والأخذ من كل كتاب لأن التلبيس قد كثر والكذب على المذاهب قد انتشر)..
اعلموا رحمنا وإياكم اللّٰه سبحانه، أن هذا الفصل من أولى هذ الفصول بالضبط لعموم البلاء، وما يدخل على الناس بإهماله، وذلك أن أحوال أهل الزمان قد اضطربت، والمعتمد فيهم قد عزّ، ومن يبيع دينه بعرض يسير، أو تحببًا إلى من يراه قد كثر والكذب على المذاهب قد انتشر، فالواجب على كل مسلم يحب الخلاص أن لا يركن إلى كل أحد، ولا يعتمد على كل كتاب، ولا يسلم عنانه إلى من أظهر له الموافقة. اه .

Imam Al-Sijzī (d 444 AH) رحمه الله said in his Risālah ilā Ahl Zubayd (p. 357):

“Chapter Eleven: On being cautious from inclining toward just anyone, and taking from every book because deception has become widespread, and lying upon the madhhabs has spread.”

Know — may Allāh have mercy on us and you — that this chapter is one of the most important to be firmly understood, due to the widespread trials and what comes upon the people because of neglecting it.

Indeed, the conditions of the people in this time have become chaotic. Trustworthy ones among them have become rare. And those who sell their religion for a small worldly gain, or to seek love from those they admire, have become many.

Lying upon the madhhabs has become widespread. So it is obligatory upon every Muslim who seeks safety that he does not incline toward just anyone, does not rely upon every book, and does not surrender his reins to whoever shows him agreement.

In the post above there is an important distinction.
There are two main positions:

1. Some scholars say that a person only deserves punishment if they oppose the Revelation — either by rejecting it or by being negligent after it has reached them.

2. Others hold that major shirk is known by sound reason and natural fitrah, so no one is excused — even if Revelation did not reach them.

However, this difference has no effect on worldly rulings. In both views, the person is judged as a mushrik in this life.

The disagreement only concerns the Hereafter whether such a person will be punished eternally or not.

So if you ever hear a scholar mention a difference of opinion on the excuse of ignorance, this is what they are referring to not the Murjiʾahs alien claim that grave worshippers are Muslims.

Can Someone Who Commits Major Shirk Still Be Called a Muslim Just Because He Says “Lā ilāha illā Allāh”?

Statement:
al-ʿAllāmah al-Mujāhid Ḥimmūd ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Tuwayjirī (d. 1413 AH) said:

"So based on this, the one who directs anything from the exclusive rights of Rubūbiyyah (Lordship) or Ulūhiyyah (Worship) to other than Allah the Most High he is not a Muslim. Rather, he is a mushrik whether he accepts that or not even if he says “Lā ilāha illa Allah” and claims to be a Muslim. Because his action goes against his statement and belies his claim.

And likewise, the one who does not disbelieve in what is worshipped besides Allah is also not a Muslim even if he says “Lā ilāha illa Allah” and does not commit shirk himself. Because disbelieving in what is worshipped besides Allah is a condition for the validity of Islām, as has already been mentioned."

Beneficial Reminder:

The foundation is to read the statements of the Imāms of the Salaf — like al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, Mālik — and the major scholars who followed them, such as Ibn Baṭṭah, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, and others.
Also study the legal rulings found in al-Durar al-Saniyyah and the fatāwā of the imams from Najd who have passed away.

There is no harm in reading the fatāwā of contemporary scholars who follow that same path with goodness but avoid blind attachment, and never place them above those who came before.

And remember:
Taking fatāwā is not a light matter. Not everyone is a muftī. You should only rely on a small number of well-grounded scholars those whose understanding is sound and whose words are rooted in the path of the Salaf in legal matters.
