📝 To the Esteemed General,📝 📝 📝 📝 I pen this dispatch from the field hospital, a scene of ceaseless toil these past two days. We have received, by my count, some three hundred souls, grievously wounded, their suffering a testament to the ferocity of the recent engagements. The transport of these unfortunates has been a trial in itself, conducted primarily by means of two-wheeled conveyances, which, alas, proved woefully inadequate amidst the quagmire of the recent rains. The mud, sir, clung to the wheels with a tenacity that defied all efforts, rendering the journey a protracted agony for both the injured and their bearers.
The nature of these wounds, I must report, is predominantly that of projectile impact. The enemy's shot, with its cruel penetration, has not merely pierced the flesh but, in many instances, dragged fragments of clothing and even ammunition deep within the tissues. This has, as you might well imagine, compounded the difficulty of extraction and cleansing. We have observed, with alarming frequency, cases of severe bone fragmentation, a testament to the projectile's destructive force, and, regrettably, numerous instances of damage to the vital internal organs.
To staunch the relentless flow of blood, a matter of utmost urgency in such dire circumstances, we have employed the method of ligation of the artery en masse, as prescribed by the esteemed A. Pair. This technique, while drastic, has proven indispensable in preserving life where lesser measures would surely fail. Following this, the wounds have been meticulously cleansed, either with the precious commodity of clean water or, when that has been in short supply, with a diluted solution of red wine, its astringent properties proving a passable substitute. Finally, the edges of these grievous rents have been carefully brought together and secured with stitches, in the hope of promoting healing and preventing further ingress of infection.
The fortitude of these men, sir, is truly remarkable, yet their suffering is profound. We continue our work with unwavering dedication, striving to alleviate their pain and restore them to health, or at the very least, to a state of comfort.
I remain, Sir, your obedient servant,
Lee Oliver Leverfont,
Field Surgeon

— Вам совершенно нечего бояться. Это моя шестнадцатая операция, так что должна же она когда‑нибудь получиться.

📝 ...📝 📝 📝 📝 Two days. Almost two full days without a wink of sleep. My hands are raw, my back screams, but there's no time for any of that. The wounded just keep coming. We took 360 prisoners, 174 of them needing a patch-up, and our own boys... 17 dead, 56 wounded, 11 missing. It's a bloody mess, and I'm just trying to keep as many of them breathing as I can...

📝 ...📝 📝 📝 📝 The rain had been relentless for days, turning Fort Erie into a muddy, miserable mess. My legs, usually steady, now ached with every step, a dull throb that intensified with each passing hour. A fever had set in, a unwelcome companion to the constant downpour, making every movement a struggle. I pushed through it, though, the needs of my men outweighing my own discomfort. Duty, after all, doesn't pause for a little rain or a bit of pain.

The recent engagements have yielded a grim harvest. Gunshot wounds, both in assault and in the desperate defence of our lines, are of frequent occurrence. The surgeon's hands are kept full.
During the protracted siege, the necessity for amputation has been direly apparent. Many brave souls have been thus maimed, their limbs surrendered to the ravages of ball and bayonet.
Furthermore, the heavens themselves conspire against our efforts. Heavy rains have rendered the earth a quagmire, severely impeding all labour and fortification work. The men labour under most trying conditions.

The days here grow longer, not in hours but in their weight — the burden of tending to the wounded never seems to lift. Yet today brought a small, unexpected joy. I have made a friend — Lieutenant James Harwell, an officer in the 15th Infantry.
I first met him when he brought a private with a deep bayonet wound to my tent. He stayed to assist — holding the man steady, passing instruments, asking thoughtful questions about the procedure. His manner was calm, his hands steady; I could see he was no stranger to suffering, though he carried it with a quiet dignity...

I write this with a heavy hand, for the ink seems to blur with the weight of what I must set down. My cousin Elias, whom I held as a brother, has been claimed by consumption.
I saw the signs too late—or perhaps I saw them too well and simply could not halt their course. The hollow cough, the wasting of his frame, the fever that burned bright then left him cold. I bled him, gave him bark tonics, urged him to rest in the purest air I could find—all the measures we hold as sound. But the disease marched on, unyielding.
Last night, as the candle guttered low, he whispered my name once more and then was still. I sat there long after, listening to the silence, knowing my skill had met its limit. This sickness walks among us with a cruel indifference, sparing none.

I went fishing today, a rather noble deed. But what a disaster I was, slipping and falling right into the sea! I got wet, but didn't catch a cold, I was extremely lucky in that... But accidentally falling into the sea was not a pleasant experience, thank God that I didn't drown, like many unlucky fishermen.
