World Sickle Cell (WSC) Day 2024

✅ Every year on June 19,WSC Day is observed.
✅ The theme for 2024 is "Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally."

✅ Gov. of India embarked on the ‘Mission for Elimination of SCD by 2047’, with PM Narendra Modi launching the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission from Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh on 1st July, 2023.
✅ The mission entails awareness creation, universal screening of 7 crore people in the age group of 0-40 years in the affected tribal areas.
✅ The focus is on tribal dominated districts of 17 states with higher prevalence of the disease.
✅ The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission is a sub mission of National Health Mission.

✅ Gujarat was the first state in the country to launch a sickle cell anemia control program in 2006.

✅ AIIMS Delhi has successfully performed India's first foetal blood transfusion to save a child with a rare blood disorder.
✅ The patient, a woman from Haryana, had suffered 7 failed pregnancies due to incompatibility between her red blood cells and those of her foetus.
✅ The foetus was suffering from anaemia and required urgent blood transfusions.
✅ The required blood type, O D phenotype red cell units, was not available in India and was imported from Japan.
✅ The foetus received 6 intrauterine blood transfusions, which successfully reversed the condition of hydrops (heart failure).
✅ The pregnancy continued for eight months, and the baby was delivered by a caesarean section.
✅ This is the first case of a successful pregnancy outcome in a case of alloimmunization due to Rh 17 Ag in India and the 8th case in the world.

Jatayu: World’s 1st Asian King Vulture Conservation & Breeding Centre

✅ Uttar Pradesh is set to establish the world’s 1st conservation and breeding centre for Asian king vultures or red-headed vultures in Maharajganj.
✅ The facility will improve the population of critically endangered species listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list since 2007.
✅ The centre is named Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre.
✅ Asian king vultures are endangered due to the loss of their habitats and the excessive use of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, in domestic animals, which becomes poisonous for vultures.
✅ The centre aims to ensure the good health of growing Vultures and provide them with a pair.
✅ Once a female lays an egg, the pair will be left free in their natural environment.

✅ India Ranked 3rd globally in the growth rate of women researchers over the last decade (2% annual growth), behind Egypt and The Netherlands, according to report by Elsevier.
👉 Women now make up 33% of active researchers in India, compared to 22% in Japan and 30% in Egypt.
👉 Gender parity has been achieved in health sciences and life sciences in India, with women representing 41% and 43% of active researchers, respectively.
👉 Globally, women researchers represent 41% of active researchers, with a strong representation in health sciences.
👉 However, gender equality in research remains "unacceptably far away", with parity not expected until 2052.
👉 Women file "vastly fewer" patent applications than men, with only 3% of patent applications filed by teams consisting only of women.

👉 The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducts the 3rd and final landing experiment of its Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) ‘Pushpak’.

✅ The landing experiment was conducted at the Aeronautical Test Range in Chitradurga, Karnataka.
✅ The ISRO says RLV LEX-03 (Reusable Launch Vehicle Landing Experiment 3), re-demonstrated the autonomous landing capability under more severe wind conditions.
✅ The Chinook helicopter released the Reusable Launch Vehicle Pushpak at an altitude of 4.5 kms from the runway.
✅ Pushpak approached the runway with a speed of 320 kmph as against 280 kmph of a typical fighter aircraft.
✅ After the touchdown, Pushpak’s velocity was reduced to nearly 100 kmph using its brake parachute. After which the landing gear brakes were employed for deceleration and stop on the runway.
✅ Pushpak utilised its rudder and nose wheel steering system to autonomously maintain a stable and precise ground roll along the runway.
