News: #Ethiopia House of Federation officiates creation of new state in #Southern_Ethiopia

The House of Federation (HoF) today passed a unanimous decision to approve the creation of a new regional state carved out of a cluster of six zones and five special woredas that were part of the #SNNP Regional State.

The new regional state called, “Southern Ethiopia Regional State”, will be the 12th regional state in Ethiopia, and the third new regional state to be created following referendums conducted by the #NEBE in the last 4 years.

As a result of today’s decision by the HoF to officiate the creation of the new state, what was formerly known as the #SNNP regional state will come to an end, and instead be composed of four separate regional states: the existing SNNP Regional State itself; Sidama Regional State; Southwest Ethiopia People’s Regional State; & Southern Ethiopia Regional State.

According to Gen. Tadesse, who was the top military commander of the Tigrayan forces, most of the ex-combatants have now been sent back home after undergoing certification, except for those in the areas of #Western, #northwest, and parts of #southern Tigray region that are still occupied by #Amhara region and #Eritrean forces, due to security concerns.

“We have provided them with certificates and some financial support for their livelihood until various rehabilitation programs commence. #Ethiopia - Allocation of administrative offices between cities in newly established cluster regions in #Southern Ethiopia raises discontent

Residents of the Gamo Zone and Arba Minch city of the Southern Ethiopia region, which received unanimous approval from the House of Federation (HoF) in July, have staged protests after unverified document widely shared on social media revealed Wolaita Sodo of the Wolaita zone as the primary administrative and political center for the new cluster region.

Residents disclose the widespread discontent, noting promises made during the referendum that Arbaminch would serve as the capital of the new region.

Similarly, Durame city in the Kembata Tembaro zone of the forthcoming Central Ethiopia region also witnessed protests challenging the proposed administrative office distribution for the new region.

#Ethiopia: Four million Ethiopians on the brink as food crises escalate

The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (#DRMC) and the #UN have issued a joint statement addressing a severe humanitarian crisis impacting around four million people in drought-stricken areas. Over the past year, repeated droughts have devastated agriculture and food accessibility in regions like# Afar, #Amhara, #Tigray, #Oromia, #Southern, and #Southwest Ethiopia.

The prolonged absence of rainfall has led to crop and livestock loss, exacerbating acute food insecurity. Malnutrition rates have surged due to a lack of nutritious food, and critical water shortages pose a threat of waterborne diseases like #malaria, #measles, and #cholera.

Despite government efforts and aid distributions, the crisis persists. From July to December 2023, 7.3 million received aid, with additional assistance reaching 6.5 million since mid-December. However, the DRMC and UN warn that without increased relief and donor support, the situation may worsen.

Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) predicts a dramatic rise in food insecurity, with four million at risk by mid-2024 without intervention. The interim administration of Tigray has urgently pleaded for aid, citing a humanitarian disaster from war and drought, evoking memories of the devastating 1984/85 famine.
