#Ethiopia: Residents call for urgent intervention after seven killed in latest armed attack in East #Meskan, #Gurage Zone

According to three local residents who spoke to Addis Standard, Saturday’s attack took place in an area called #Dida, in the Meskan Woreda, a woreda located some 135 Km south east of the capital #Addis_Abeba.

A resident who lives in close proximity to where the armed attack occurred, said that the victims were on their way from #Dida town to #Enseno town, heading to the customary Saturday market.

This latest attack comes in the backdrop of a renewed violence in the area, which has inflicted fear and insecurity amongst the local population. In early July, local newspapers reported the killing of five civilians in the same woreda by unidentified armed group.

The residents say the underlying cause of these recurrent violence appears to be a long standing dispute regarding the administrative demarcation between Meskan and Mareko districts of the Gurage zone. In light of these events, residents are making an urgent plea to the government to intervene and address the dire situation.

#Ethiopia: #NEBE extends voter registration period for postponed elections

The National Election Board of Ethiopia has announced a one-week extension to the voter registration period for by-elections and re-elections that were postponed during the 6th round of national elections in 2021. This decision applies to the remaining polls in the Benishangul Gumuz and #Afar regions, as well as the Jigjiga 2, #Meskan, and #Mareko constituencies.

The initial voter registration period was scheduled to conclude on May 13, 2024. However, the board cited several reasons for extending the deadline until May 20, 2024, including overlapping public and religious holidays during the registration timeframe, delays in opening certain polling stations, and requests from political parties contesting the elections.
