News: Armed attack on police station in #Bishoftu city kills four police officers

An armed attack on a police station in the Chalalaka sub-city of Bishoftu City in East Shoa zone of Oromia region left four policemen dead, an official confirmed to Addis Standard.

The attack was carried out by unidentified armed men on Saturday, 14 May according to Dejene Bajiro, head of communications office of the city.

“This attack was carried out at midnight, by unidentified gunmen on a police station in Cheleleka, sub-city. Four policemen guarding the police station were killed in the attack,” Dejene said.

According to the official, “the identity of the group is unknown, but the attempt was to release prisoners in the police station, who are under the custody of the law”.

“The armed group involved in the shooting, which lasted for a few minutes, could be robbers or bandits,” Dejene said, adding that the police are still investigating to determine the identity of the group.

#Ethiopia-#China: Ethiopia launches "Chinese Bridge" competition for university, high school students

A total of 16 students from three Ethiopian universities and six senior high school students attended the annual worldwide #Chinese speaking and performance event.

#Gemechis_Melaku, a fourth year Chinese language student at the AAU, received rounds of applause from the audience for his speech and traditional Chinese music performance, and eventually won the category for university students.

"I am very happy to have won this competition. This is a very good opportunity to develop our Chinese language skills and further deepen our knowledge and understanding of China and Chinese culture," Gemechis said.

#Siyane_Tadesse, 10th grader at the #Bishoftu ODA Boarding School, won the category for senior high school students. "It was very challenging and I was nervous initially but later I became more and more confident. I am so happy for winning," she said.

#ASDailyScoop: #Ethiopian Navy graduates members trained in various fields

Having been reorganized after 31 years, the Ethiopian Navy said its members who graduated today have been trained by foreign and domestic instructors in various fields.
In February last year, Ethiopian navy officials briefed a vising #Russian navy delegation that works were underway to reorganize the navy unit with trained manpower based on other countries’ navy unit and Ethiopia’s previously existing experience. An agreement was also reached with the Russian Federation Navy to work together in various fields of training.

A month later, Rear Admiral Kindu Gezu said that Ethiopia was building a navy capable of countering internal and external attacks.

The Commander-in-Chief said this during a tour he conducted to the Navy Basic Training School located in #Bishoftu, #Oromia state, on 24 March where he discussed with the students.

The 2023 Irreecha, the #Oromo nation's colorful annual festival, will be celebrated on Saturday 07 and Sunday 08 October 2023, the Abba Gadaa Council announced on Sunday.

The Council said that the festival will be celebrated in #Addis_Abeba at the Hora #Finfinne on Saturday 07, and in #Bishoftu at the Hora #Harsadii on Sunday 08 October.

The leaders of the Abba Gadaa Council extended their invitations to all nations and nationalities in Ethiopia to join them in the celebrations of the Irreecha festival, which is observed by giving thanks to Waaqa Gurraacha (the Black God) for the end of the rainy season and beginning of the spring harvest season.

The deputy Administrator of Moyale district, Guyo Huqqa, has welcomed the guests together with local communities.

The #Borena zone, Moyale district in Oromia region said the guests came from different parts of Kenya including the capital #Nairobi, #Isiolo, #Marsabet and #Moyale city in the Kenyan side.

#Irreechaa: A festival giving boost to the rise of #Oromo fashion industry

Along with the rise of the demand for the clothing, new fashion designers have joined the industry.

A young designer Firtuna Bekele owns a cultural cloth shop in #Bishoftu, a city 45 kilometers from the capital Addis Abeba and the epicentre of Irreechaa celebrations.

Speaking to Addis Standard, Firtuna said that due to a positive impact of Irreechaa festival, the demand for the cultural cloth has increased. She also mentioned that she hired additional workers to satisfy the growing demand.

Firtuna is specialized in a traditional costume known as ‘#Wendebo’.

Dereje Adamu, another professional in the industry, said the demand has increased significantly though the market competition is high due to increased production and quality.

Dereje owns a shop in #Addis_Abeba in an area known as Shiromeda.

#Ethiopia conducts first of its kind air show to celebrate the 88th founding anniversary of the Ethiopian Air Force.

The "Black Lion Air Show” was organized in collaboration with the #UAE and was carried out today in #Bishoftu city.

In the run up to the air show, Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdassa spoke to state media, among others, about the restructuring & preparedness of the Air Force to respond to modern day warfare, and the multifaceted relationship with the UAE, focusing on the depth of military relationship.

#Ethiopia: Ministry of Tourism reveals star ratings for 31 hotels; no five-star ratings awarded

The Ministry of Tourism has disclosed the star classification results for 31 hotels, out of the total 64 that have satisfied the mandatory criteria established by the World Tourism Organization (#WTO). None of the 31 hotels attained a five-star rating. These hotels are situated in #Addis_Abeba, #Adama, and #Bishoftu cities.

From the total of 64 hotels evaluated within the past two years, seven were granted a 4-star rating, while nine received a 3-star designation. Furthermore, five hotels were categorized as 2-star accommodations, and eight were identified as 1-star establishments. Two hotels were determined to fall below the prescribed rating standards.

During the ceremony conducted yesterday to unveil the hotel rankings, Tourism Minister Ambassador Nassise Chali disclosed that the hotel ratings will persist in aligning with the 12 international criteria stipulated by the WTO.

#Ethiopia: Government officials to get medical treatments in Bishoftu—PM Abiy Ahmed

On May 18, 2024, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the Defense Specialized Referral Hospital in #Bishoftu, #Oromia. The facility is touted as a state-of-the-art medical center.

During the inauguration, PM Abiy called upon Ethiopian doctors working abroad to return and serve at the new hospital. He also outlined a new policy mandating government officials to receive medical treatment at this facility.

The Prime Minister stated that government officials will no longer be allowed to seek medical appointments outside of the Bishoftu hospital. He urged the Ministry of Health and the Office of the Prime Minister to ensure strict compliance with this directive, emphasizing the importance of utilizing domestic healthcare infrastructure.

#Ethiopia plans $316 billion climate strategy to schieve carbon neutrality by 2050

The Ministry of Planning and Development recently announced that Ethiopia needs $316 billion in funding to support its climate change mitigation strategy, aiming for zero carbon emissions by 2050. This announcement was made during an annual performance evaluation for climate change projects held in #Bishoftu city, according to state media reports.

Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister of the Ministry of Planning and Development, emphasized Ethiopia's efforts in implementing policies and strategies to address climate change. He stated that the country aims to demonstrate leadership in global climate initiatives through early and decisive action.

Seyoum highlighted the urgency of tackling climate change, citing increasing human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, species extinction, habitat loss, and global warming.

#Ethiopian_Airlines signs agreement with #UAE company for new $6 billion airport design

Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with UAE company #Dar to carry out design work for a new mega airport to be constructed near #Bishoftu at a cost of 6 billion USD.

According to local media reports, the company will finalize and submit the design of the airport in one year and will have consultancy role during the construction of the airport which will take five years to finish.

The airport, to be constructed on a 35 square kilometer land, will serve more than 100 million passengers annually upon full completion, and will have a landing and take-off capacity of up to 4 planes at the same time.

Bole International airport currently has the capacity of serving 25 million passengers annually.
