Beyond Habitat Loss: How Noise Pollution Is Altering Primate Behaviour
A recent study from Malaysia highlights an emerging dimension of human–wildlife interaction: the impact of anthropogenic noise on primate communication.
Researchers examined the vocal behaviour of the white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar), an endangered primate known for its complex and distinctive songs.
What did researchers find?
Gibbon vocalisations were recorded at three locations with different levels of human activity during 2023–24:
Highway site: calling recorded in 36% of observations
Seaside site: 71.4%
Hiking-trail site: 84.6%
The study found that as background noise increased, the likelihood of gibbons calling decreased.

Inter-group communication
Social coordination and bonding
Mate attraction
Persistent anthropogenic noise may therefore interfere with essential communication and potentially influence social and reproductive behaviour.

A 2026 study published in the American Journal of Human Genetics provides new insights into the complex genetic architecture of cerebral palsy (CP).
Key Findings
• 21 genomic studies | 5,440 individuals → 515 potentially causal genes identified.
• Only 89 genes showed statistically significant association with CP.
• Whole-genome sequencing of 460 children from 453 families identified pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in 60 genes in 15.8% of children.
• Of these 60 genes, only 16 had strong statistical evidence specifically linking them to CP.
Anthropological Significance
The findings support understanding CP as a clinical phenotype encompassing diverse movement disorders, rather than a disorder attributable to a single uniform genetic pathway.
They also highlight the importance of gene–environment interaction and multifactorial causation in understanding human disease and phenotypic variation.
