Russia has continued to massively strike Ukrainian assault groups with glide-bombs in the Novopavlivka direction, as they advance towards the tactically significant Filiya fortified forest.
Sentinel-2 satellite imagery reveals that for 38 days between between May 24 and June 30, Russian Su-34s dropped at least 144 KAB glide-bombs on positions of advancing Ukrainian assault groups - an average of around 3.79 per day.
Between July 1 and July 8, Russian Su-34s dropped at least 34 more KAB glide-bombs - an average of around 4.25 per day.
In total, over this 46-day period, at least 178 KABs were dropped on Ukrainian positions. Most of these strikes occurred on the forested areas along tactical heights overlooking Ivanivka.
Nevertheless, this has not stopped the Ukrainian advance. Once the first goal of these counterattacks (forcing the Russians to withdraw from Ivanivka) was complete, Ukrainian forces began working towards their second goal - pushing Russian forces out of the Filiya fortified forest.
This forest, which was captured by Russian forces a little over a year ago, constitutes the only section of the Ukrainian so-called "New Donbas" defensive line that Russian forces had managed to breach and consolidate in. The other location that Russian forces breached was near Zolotyi Kolodyaz in the Dobropillya direction in August 2025, however, Ukrainian forces were able to push the Russians back from there shortly after the initial breakthrough.
This line, which consists of 3 layers of anti-tank ditches, 3 layers of barbed wire, and a layer of dragon's teeth fortifications is designed to work as a kill-zone, only lightly manned by soldiers. It was created with Ukraine's critical manpower shortages in mind, in an attempt at reducing the effects of heavy Russian attrition on Ukrainian manpower.
Currently, Ukrainian forces have managed to reach the line, capturing a series of positions in the forests to the north, but are yet to push Russian forces back from the Filiya forest itself.
Because of these extremely heavy Russian airstrikes, Ukrainian assault groups are probably taking significant casualties in these attacks. However, if they are able to push the Russians back beyond this line, Ukraine will likely be able to reduce the concentration of manpower in this sector, as the layered defensive line is primarily held remotely by drone operators, requiring less of an infantry presence.
