Interesting developments have been taking place in Kharkiv Oblast over the last week, which should not be ignored: Ukraine is moving additional forces out of the Kupyansk sector, and this time are sending them to the Vovchansk area in response to increasedโฆ
The Ukrainian units redeployed from the Kupyansk direction to the Vovchansk direction that I reported on a month ago are now taking part in a coordinated series of counterattacks.
These counterattacks are aimed at pushing the Russians back from their positions on the eastern bank of the Siverskyi-Donets River to the western part of Vovahnsk, limiting their bridgehead over the Vovcha River in a similar manner to the localised counteroffensive in the Stepnohirsk area of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Keep in mind, the scale of the assault forces involved is not nearly large enough for this to be considered a "counteroffensive".
Currently, these forces are carrying out assault operations in the area of Lyman, Vilcha, Synelnykove, and the southern outskirts of Vovchansk, achieving tactical advances which threaten Russian formations stationed in the Prylipka-Lyman-Symynivka-Verkhnya Pysarivka-Hrafske area with encirclement.
Ukrainian forces stationed in the Starystya area are counterattacking too, following last month's targeted raids into Russian strongpoints in the large forests north of the village. Although, it is important to mention that these forces were not redeployed from anywhere else, and have been operating in this area for a long time. As such, the scale of the counterattacks in the Starytsya area will be much more limited, and likely completely separate to the larger effort east of the Siverskyi Donets River.
The other part of the forces redeployed to this sector are attempting to stabilise the situation east of Vovchansk, where Russia recently broke through the international border towards the Vovcha River. The fact that some Russian soldiers have managed to cross the Vovcha River and infiltrate additional settlements highlights the critical situation for Ukraine there.
However, these redeployments from Kupyansk occurred due to a lack of available reserves. This means that as a result of these redeployments, the Ukrainian defence in the Kupyansk direction has been weakened, which has allowed Russia to make new tactical advances east of the Oskil River, and significantly increase the presence of their infiltrators in the western and central parts of Kupyansk city.
Russia will likely try to further intensify their assault operations in the Kupyansk direction in the near future in order to take advantage of the fact that the Ukrainian position there is the weakest its been since September 2025.
