Homeless people in Brazil – level 1

People in Brazil have problems with money. Last year is very hard for them. Many people lose their jobs because of the coronavirus. They cannot pay rent. They have nowhere to live.

Reports say that around 66,000 people are homeless. Homeless means that they have no home. The number is three times higher than in 2019. These people live in tents or shelters.

Families beg for money on busy streets. They ask other people for help. Churches and charities help them. They give them food.

The government helps, too. Sadly, the help ends this month. Experts worry that the situation will get worse. It seems that prices of things will go higher. More people will have problems to pay rent and buy food.

Difficult words: rent (the money which a person must pay when he uses a room or house), shelter (a place where somebody can stay when he is in a difficult situation), charity (an organization which helps people who are sick or who have no money).

Homeless people in Brazil – level 2

Last year´s economic crisis hit Brazil hard. The coronavirus is disappearing from big cities, but there are many people without homes or food.

Reports say that the number of homeless people in the country tripled since 2019, and it is now more than 66,000. Some people lost their jobs during the pandemic, and they could not pay rent. Families slept in tents and shelters on beaches, and they asked for money on busy streets. Some hotels turned into shelters to help solve the situation.

The president promised to support poor people, but the help will end this month. Experts worry that prices will continue to rise, and more people will be living on the street.

Difficult words: economic crisis (a problem that affects money and how people live for everyone in a place), homeless (a person who has no home), triple (to increase to three times the size or amount).

Homeless people in Brazil – level 3

The coronavirus is fading from Brazil´s biggest cities; however, homelessness and hunger are on the rise.

Estimates say that the number of people who lack money to afford housing now totals over 66,000, nearly triple the amount of the most recent census from 2019. In Rio de Janeiro, there are about 14,000, which is about double the last official count from last year. Tents and shelters line sidewalks, entire families beg at busy streets, and there are lines of people at the doors of churches and organizations that give help.

Vaccines are now widespread; however, high inflation is removing the little that Brazil made after recovering from last year´s economic crisis. Ahead of next year’s elections, President Jair Bolsonaro is now promising to significantly grow cash transfers to the poor; however, economists fear that prices are going to continue rising.

Difficult words: fade (to disappear), census (an official survey), inflation (an increase in prices over time, causing the value of money to go down).

Koala Stops the Traffic – level 2

A koala walked across a highway in Australia where it stopped busy traffic. A policeman guided the little animal to safety. People looked on with amusement and filmed the animal. The police officer stayed close to the koala until it climbed up a tree.

Koalas look really sweet, but experts say that koalas should not be picked up because of their sharp claws.

Difficult words: guide (to help something go somewhere), amusement (fun), claw (an animal’s nail).

Koala Stops the Traffic – level 3

Police had to escort a koala to safety from a busy Australian highway. The native marsupial had wandered onto the road where it stopped the busy traffic.

A video posted to Facebook shows cars stopped on the roadway while a policeman shepherds the animal to safety. The koala ambled and hopped casually along the highway before eventually taking refuge in greenery next to the road, all to the amusement of motorists. The officer stayed close to the koala until it climbed a tree to safety.
Koalas look cute but experts say that they should not be picked up because they have sharp claws.

Difficult words: marsupial (a mammal like the kangaroo and the koala), wander (walk without a specific destination), shepherd (to guide), amble (walk slowly and in a relaxed way), take refuge (to find a safe place), amusement (enjoinment, fun), claw (an animal’s nail).

Europeans travel to US again – level 1

In March 2020, the US closes its borders. People from Europe cannot visit families or friends. They cannot do business or go on a vacation. This is for more than 600 days.

Now it is possible again. Thousands of happy travelers come to European airports. Sadly, more and more people are sick with COVID-19. It is possible that travel from Europe will stop again.

Restaurant and hotel owners in the US are happy. The situation is getting better.

Sadly, airlines have big problems. They lose billions of dollars last year. Hundreds of thousands of people lose their jobs.

Difficult words: border (a line between two countries), owner (a person who has something), airline (a company which carries people or things in planes).

Europeans travel to US again – level 2

After more than 600 days, the US opened to travelers from Europe. Passengers across Europe crowded into airports, and they were happy that they would finally meet relatives, do business, or simply enjoy a vacation.

Data shows that hotel and flight reservations already reached 70% of the levels before the COVID-19 pandemic started. Unfortunately, the number of COVID-19 cases is also increasing across Europe, so it is possible that Europeans will not be able to travel again.

Also, travelers are happy, but airlines are not. Hundreds of thousands of airline employees lost their jobs during the pandemic, and airlines lost hundreds of billions of dollars.

Difficult words: to crowd (when many people come to one place), relative (a person who in the same family as other people), data (information and numbers).

Europeans travel to US again – level 3

After waiting for more than 600 days, passengers across Europe crowded into airports to catch their first flights to the US since March 2020 when the country closed to most European travelers.

According to data from Travelport, a global technology company, flight reservations to and within the US have already reached 70% of their pre-pandemic levels.

Travelers were united by a sense of exhilaration despite the arduous process of getting through long lines and having paperwork ready. However, the upbeat mood can´t hide the fact that the aviation industry remains deep in crisis.  Losses from the coronavirus pandemic are set to pass hundreds of billions of dollars this year, and hundreds of thousands of airline employees have lost their jobs.

Difficult words: exhilaration (a feeling of great happiness and excitement), arduous (difficult to accomplish or achieve), upbeat (cheerful or optimistic).

The situation is bad on the border between Poland and Belarus. Many people want to leave Belarus. They have no jobs. They have nothing to eat.

They come to the border with Poland. Polish soldiers stop them. People sleep in tents. It is very cold at night. Several people die.

German activists help the people. They give them food and water. Then, Belarusian soldiers come. Some people say that the soldiers take their phones.

Alexander Lukashenko is the president of Belarus. The European Union says that he wants to make it less powerful. Lukashenko says that it is not true.

Difficult words: border (the line between two countries or areas), activist (a person who protests and does activities to change the government), powerful (strong).

Problems for Poland and Belarus – level 2

Thousands of people are trying to escape Belarus, and the situation is getting worse on the border between Poland and Belarus. Many migrants want to leave Belarus because they have no work and nothing to eat.

They went to the border last week, but Polish soldiers stopped them. Then, Belarusian soldiers wanted the situation under control and stopped the migrants from leaving the country. Some people said that soldiers took their phones. Several people also died because they slept in tents, and it was too cold at night.

The EU said that the Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko wanted to make the EU look less powerful, but Lukashenko said that it was not true.

Difficult words: escape (to get away from something), migrant (a person who leaves his country to live a better life somewhere else), powerful (strong).

Problems for Poland and Belarus – level 3

Drone footage captured the growing problems on the Poland-Belarus border after a political stand-off led to a worsening situation.

Poland is blocking hundreds of migrants from entering at the Belarus border, and the Polish government sent extra soldiers and warned of a possible armed conflict. Up to 4,000 people gathered at the country´s eastern border, and it was said that Belarusian soldiers took migrants’ mobile phones, and they were controlling the people.

Many migrants are running from war, starvation, and persecution across the Middle East and Asia. Several people have died as overnight temperatures regularly fall below zero.

According to an EU spokesperson, the conflict is a continuation of the desperate attempt by Alexander Lukashenko‘s government to use people as hostages to destabilize the EU and its values. However, Belarus´s leader denied creating this problem.

Difficult words: stand-off (a situation in which neither of two opposing groups will make a move until the other one does something), persecution (unfair or cruel treatment over a long period of time because of race, religion or political beliefs), destabilize (to make something less stable or secure).

Love Fridge – level 1

Millions of people around the world do not have enough food. In 2012, an interesting idea starts in Germany. The idea is for a special fridge. People call it a love fridge.

This fridge is outside. People can bring food in it. Then, other people can take the food. They may need food.

Restaurants and local people cook the meals. People help each other. Many people come for food every day. The fridges are often empty.

In the US, 35 million Americans do not have enough food. Sadly, there is enough food. The food does not get to the people who need it. In 2019, Americans throw away a lot of food. Also, stores in some places do not sell good food.

Difficult words: fridge (kitchen equipment which is cold inside, and people keep food in it), local (people or things which are in one area), empty (with nothing inside).

Love Fridge – level 2

In 2012, community fridges started in Germany, and the idea quickly moved to other countries, too.

A community fridge is in a public space, and people can take food from the fridge if they need it. Also, people can bring food and leave it in the fridge. Some people started to call these fridges love fridges because they brought people together. They showed that many people wanted to help each other.

Last year, around 35 million Americans had problems getting enough food. In 2019, an interesting fact was Americans threw away 35% of all their food. It showed that the problem was not a lack of food, but the problem was in communities where people who needed the food most could not get it.

Difficult words: community (a group of people who live in the same place or who have the same ideas), public (open to or shared by all the people of an area or country), lack (not enough of something).
