📋 EY recruitment process — a real inside account
An EY auditor shared their recruitment experience with me. Sharing it here — this is exactly what most candidates are missing before they apply.
Quick disclaimer: this is one person's experience and the process may have changed. Use it as a reference, not a rulebook.
Stage 1 — Offline test (2 hours)
The test covered several areas:
— English — reading comprehension in IELTS format
— Russian language — grammar and language knowledge
— Financial accounting — financial statements, journal entries, depreciation, core concepts. Level: easier than ACCA F3, but not trivial. If you have a solid foundation — you'll be fine
— Logical reasoning — including open-ended questions where you had to explain your answers in writing, not just pick a multiple choice option
Overall impression: not easy, but not overwhelming. Candidates with an accounting background and strong English passed confidently.
Stage 2 — Interview with HR and audit manager
Two types of questions:
General:
— Why EY, why audit
— Strengths and weaknesses
— Willingness to travel and work overtime
Technical (audit manager):
— Double entry — debits and credits using real-life scenarios
— Financial statements
— Loans and other core accounting topics
Technical level: ACCA F3 / basic F7.
Stage 3 — Group meeting with a partner
Only 5 candidates were invited to the final stage.
The format wasn't a classic interview — more of a conversation with the partner in a group setting. No technical accounting questions. The focus was on general knowledge, critical thinking, and how you communicate.
"The partner did most of the talking, we listened, and asked questions at the end" — come prepared with thoughtful questions, not silence.
Key takeaways:
1/ Know your accounting basics. Double entry, financial statements, depreciation — minimum requirement. ACCA F3 is a strong advantage
2/ Both English and Russian matter
3/ Open-ended questions in the test — practice explaining your thinking in writing, not just selecting answers
4/ The final stage is about who you are, not what you know. Be yourself, prepare questions for the partner

1. We read financial statements of UzAuto. Analyzed it. Made conclusions: where the company is going? How the working capital strategy has changed and why UzAuto Motors is issuing bonds?
2. We have analyzed historical financial statements of a distribution company. Built three financial statements for the coming 5 years and learned what kind of decisions are made using the financial model
3. We have built 12 month budget of a coffee shop chain. It was not just a forecast income statement. We built three financial statements for 12 months
We discussed how the budget can assist decision-making at operational level.
4. As a final task we have built a project finance model. Analyzed what is the optimum acquisition cost that satisfies both lenders and equity investors
5. We talked about financial system in Uzbekistan. Discussed the future of finance profession in the era of AI (i.e Claude)
We did a lot during the 7-week program.
Generally, it was acceptable by participants. Yet, I personally noted some drawbacks.
We are opening admission for Financial Analyst 2.0. It will be even more interesting with new case studies.
