Ashwagandha: The Ancient Medicinal Herb

● Scientifically known as Withania somnifera, is a revered medicinal herb native to India, northern Africa, and the Middle East.

● Also referred to as Indian ginseng or Indian winter cherry.

● The name stems from the Sanskrit words "ashwa" for horse and "gandha" for smell, owing to its roots' distinctive odor resembling that of a wet horse.

- Medicinal Uses: Regarded as an adaptogen, it aids the body in coping with stressors and promoting overall balance and well-being.

● Scientifically known as Chrysopogon zizanioides, is a variety of reed grass belonging to the zizanoides grass family.

● Rich yellowish hue and golden luster upon drying.

- Locally known as : 'Kaincha' and Golden Grass.

- Origins and Cultural Significance: Finds mention in Ramayana, where it is recognized by various names like viran, sugandhimool, ushir, and nalad.

- Indigenous to : Tarai regions of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar,

- Average height : 3-4 feet.

● Crafting of artefacts , perfumery and medicinal purposes.

- Causes :

● Mutations in the GAA gene
● GAA gene produces enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase (acid maltase)
● Enzyme breaks down glycogen into glucose in lysosomes
● Mutations prevent effective breakdown of glycogen, leading to buildup in lysosomes

- Symptoms :

● Muscle weakness
● Respiratory issues
● Heart problems
● Difficulty swallowing

- Types :

● Infantile-onset: Symptoms start in first few months after birth
● Late-onset or delayed-onset: Symptoms appear later in childhood or adulthood

- Prevalence : Affects males and females equally

- Treatment : Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT)
