Merger
When 2 existing companies combine to form one new company, it is called a merger.
Companies merge to gain higher market share and expand into new markets.
The new company's shares are distributed accordingly to the existing shareholders of both the previous companies.
There are different types of mergers depending on the companies involved:
- Horizontal mergers: between companies with similar products/services in the same industry. Example: a tyre maker and another tyre maker.
- Vertical mergers: between companies in the same industry but with different products. Example: A car maker and a tyre maker.
- Conglomerate mergers: between companies with different industries selling different products/services. Example: an FMCG parent company and a pharma parent company.
