📩 Question:

What is the meaning when Ahlus Sunnah say: Allahs attributes are affirmed without Tahreef, nor Ta’teel, nor Takyeef and without Tamtheel?

📝 The answer:

At-Tahreef: is to mention other meanings with regards to the texts of Allahs attributes which is in opposition to its meanings which are understood apparently. And the answer for you is to affirm the attributes with the meanings which were understood by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and were understood by the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and understood by the Muslims from the Noble Book of Allah, and the Sunnah of His Prophet (ﷺ).

So you must not affirm other meanings which oppose that which is understood from it. And for this reason the Salaf said:
تمر كما جاءت
“Affirm it as it has come”
i.e. according to the meanings that are understood from it.

And At-Ta’teel: is to negate the attributes of Allah سبحانه وتعالى this is Ta’teel. Allah سبحانه وتعالى described Himself with attributes, so the one who negates them, then they have devoid Allah from His attributes.

And At-Takyeef: is to make a specific description for the nature of it in ones mind. So if he likenes Him to the creation, then it is Al-Tamtheel, and if he asks about its nature, or he searches for the nature, or he attributes a secific nature in his mind, then this is Takyeef.

And Allah سبحانه وتعالى did not teach anyone the nature of His attributes.
Allah تعالى says:
﴿يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلا يُحِيطُونَ بِهِ عِلْمًا﴾ [طه:١١٠ ]
“He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them (in the Hereafter) but they will never compass anything of His Knowledge.”

If a human tries to bring to his mind the nature of Allahs attributes, then this is not allowed, it is obligatory upon him to seek refuge with Allah from that, and to finish from that, for this is from the waswas (whisperings of shaytan). And it is also not allowed for him to ask about the nature of it, to say what is the nature of this attribute and what is the nature of that attribute.

And al-Imam Malik رحمه الله when he was asked how Allah rose above His throne, he said:
الاستواء غير مجهول، والكيف غير معقول، والإيمان به واجب، والسؤال عنه بدعة
“The rising is not unknown, and the nature of it is not comprehendable, and to have Iman in it is obligatory, and to ask about the nature, is a heresy”
Then he commanded for the Man to be removed. He said:
ما أراك إلا مبتدعًا
"I do not see you to be except a heretic."
Reported by Al-Bayhaqi with an authentic chain of transmission as has come in Al-Asmaa Wa Al-Sifaat.
