In this lecture series—which serves as an introduction to future discussions on the topic of the theoretical foundations of Sharia in Islam—we will address the issue of God’s justice and its relationship to moral values and the religious obligations of human beings. In this session, we discussed general concepts concerning the topic of justice, as well as the theologians’ understanding of God’s justice. We then continued with a discussion on the subject of moral responsibility (taklīf) and the morally responsible human being — that is, the human moral agent — from the perspective of theologians.
Within this same framework, we examined reason and its definition according to theologians, and whether moral values, from the standpoint of reason and human understanding, correspond to objective reality or are merely rational constructs.
