🔻"Hikmah in the Qur'an", Lec01
speaker, Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Sep 28, 2025
Topic: General Introduction – Ḥikmah and Ḥukm in the Qur’ān
Summary:
In this first lecture, we looked briefly to each of the 19 verses of the Qur'an in which the word hikmah (حكمة) has been used.
We also looked to chronological order of the revelation of these verses based on Noldeke chronology. There is not any important difference in the chronological order between different chronological lists. The most relevant chronological factor is whether the verses are Meccan or Medinan. Six of these 19 verses are in the Meccan surahs and 13 including Q2:269 in which the word "Hikmah" is repeated twice are in Medinan surahs.
Following Saqib Hussain, whose dissertation "Wisdom in the Qur'an"( Oxford, July 2022) is the foundational reference for these lecture series, these verses were categorized in the following four category.
🔹Ḥikmah given to the Previous Prophets: Q 2:251, Q3:48, Q3:81, Q4:54, Q5:110, Q38:20, and Q43:63.
🔹Ḥikmah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad(ص): Q2:231, Q4:113, Q16:125, Q17:39,Q33:34 and Q54:4–5.
🔹The four primary duties of the Prophet Muhammad: Q 2:129, Q2:151,Q3:164 and Q62:2.
🔹Ḥikmah Given to the non-Prophets: Q 2:269, and Q31:12.

🔻"Hikmah in the Qur'an", Lec02
speaker, Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Oct 5, 2025
Topic: A Survey of the Literature on the Meaning of the term Hikmah (Wisdom) in the Qur'an
Summary:
In the second lecture, we did a brief literature review of what classical and modern Qur'an mufassirs (commentators) has said about the meaning of Hikmah (Wisdom) in Qur'an.
From the classical commentators we looked to Muqatil bin Sulayman (d.150AH/767AD), Abd al-Razzaq al- San'ani(d.211AH/827AD), al- Shafi'i(d.204AH/ 820AD), al-Tabari(d.310AH,923AD), Abu-Hayyan(d.745AD/1344AD) and al- Firuzabadi's(d.817,1415AD).
We saw an important tension implicit in some of the earlier definitions – is ḥikmah a part of and intrinsic to scripture, e.g., the legal and/or hortatory content of the latter, or is it apart from and extrinsic to God’s revealed books
Regarding the modern commentators we divided them into two groups of Salafi and Reformist commentators. From among salafi commentators we looked to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Nāṣir b. Saʿdī (d. 1956 , Saudi), Abū Bakr al Jazāʾirī (d. 1921, Algerian). Salafi tafsīrs are the most insistent in tying ḥikmah to an understanding of the religion itself, even for verses where it is not conjoined with kitāb.
By contrast, modern tafsīr scholars coming from reformist backgrounds have often expanded the scope of qur’anic ḥikmah beyond “understanding scripture and religious law. From among the reformists commentators we looked to Rashīd Riḍā (d. 1935, Syrian) and his teacher Muḥammad ʿAbduh (d. 1905, Egyptian), Mohammed Abu Zaid al-Damanhury (d. 20th c., 1930, Egyptian), Abū l-Kalām Āzād (d. 1958, Indian), the Shiʿī scholar Muḥammad Ḥusayn Ṭabāṭabāʾī (d. 1982, Iranian) Ibn ʿĀshūr (d. 1973, Tunisian) and Jāvēd Aḥmad Ghāmidī (b. 1952, Pakistani).
We may broadly divide most of the various definitions surveyed of Qur’anic ḥikmah into two groups:
🔹First, there are those interpretations that make ḥikmah some component or instance of divine revelation. This includes definitions that equate qur’anic ḥikmah with a biblical book, such as the Psalms or the Gospels.
🔹Second, we have definitions that make ḥikmah a human faculty of understanding, synonymous with the human intellect ('aql). Within this latter group of definitions, ḥikmah, insofar as it means “understanding” or “intellect,” is frequently connected to correctly understanding scripture.

1. The difference between the views of theologians (mutakallimun) and philosophers regarding the issue of the world's origination;
2. The discussion of "necessity" and its background in theology and philosophy, as well as the topic of causal necessity, and the differing views of theologians and philosophers on causality, causation, and agency;
3. The difference between the theologians' and philosophers' views on the meaning of intellect (‘aql), the rational soul (nafs nāṭiqa), and the perception of intelligibles and universals.

🔻"Hikmah in the Qur'an", Lec03
speaker, Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Oct 12, 2025
Topic: Understanding of Wisdom in the Traditions before Islam
Summary:
In this lecture we briefly looked to some of the examples of the "Wisdom traditions and Wisdom literature before Islam".
As Robert Wilken in 1973 observes: "Wisdom … is an extraordinary cross-cultural phenomenon and could be found in different forms in all the religious currents of late antiquity.… ". He adds: "Wisdom literature seems always to have been an accepted intercultural and interethnic coinage, appropriated as religiously neutral and non-committal.” Therefore wisdom was exchanged and shared between different cultures and traditions. This exchange may have affected the understanding of Quran's audience of "Hikmah".
We can list the main texts and themes of biblical and late antique wisdom discourse that may be particularly relevant for understanding Qur’anic Hikmah as the following:
1) Hebrew Bible Wisdom
2) Deuterocanonical Wisdom
3) Wisdom In Early Jewish (non- scriptural) Literature
4) New Testament Wisdom
5) Christian Wisdom
6) Rabbinic (post temple) Wisdom
7) Philosophical Wisdom
8) Non-Biblical Arabian and Other Semitic Wisdom
In this lecture, we briefly looked to some examples of cases 1, 2, 4, and 8 on the list.
But there are some challenges in regard to any discussion of wisdom in context of scriptural traditions which manifest themselves in the following type of questions: 1)What is the relationship between wisdom and divinely revealed scripture ought to be? 2)If people can attain wisdom that enables them to discern how best to live their lives, what is the purpose of scripture? 3)How wisdom is to be attained? 4)Is it through human effort, and is thus, at least potentially, universally accessible, or is it divinely bestowed upon an elite?
Therefore before examining specific examples of wisdom in traditions before Islam we did relatively a more extensive discussion of the relevant foundational issues of Natural Law (قانون تکوینی) in contrast to Positive Law (قانون تشریعی), and also Natural Morality (اخلاق فطری).
