🔻"Sunni Views on Imam Hussain (a.s.) Movement"
Lec4: Was Yazid ibn Muawiyah Part of the First Campaign Against the Byzantine (Roman) Empire — and Why Does It Matter?
speaker: Dr. Farhad Ghoddoussi
Sep 7, 2025

summary:

In this fourth lecture, we focused on the issue of the Yazid ibn Muawiyah's participation in the first campaign against the Byzantine empire and it's importance.

Usually, the first Arab/Muslim attempt to conquer Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine empire, is assumed to have occurred during Muawiyah's caliphate, but there is disagreement about the year and even the number of attempts. It has been dated to 44, 48, 54, and 59 AH. It has become famous that Yazid ibn Muawiyah was present in this first campaign.

According to a hadith in Sahih Bukhari (Hadith 2924, Book 56 Al-Jihad wa al-Siyar, Hadith 137), the Prophet promises that the first group to undertake a naval campaign will have Paradise made obligatory for them, and the first group to undertake a land campaign against the city of Caesar (Constantinople?!) will have their sins forgiven.

Some Sunni scholars, for absolving Yazid ibn Muawiyah of the grave sins which he committed during his caliphate, with the motivation of producing legitimacy for the Umayyad rule have tried to place Yazid in the second group above, with the conclusion that his sins were forgiven even before he committing them. However, a recent paper by Nathaniel Miller (Al-ʿUṣūr al-Wusṭā 31 (2023): 45-76) argues satisfactorily that the first attempt toward conquering Byzantium and its capital Constantinople took place in 33/34 AH (654 CE) during Uthman's caliphate when Muawiya was the governor of Syria(Levant, شام).

This major military campaign, which was conducted both by land and sea, ended in defeat in both fronts. There is not much trace regarding this major defeated campaign in Islamic historical sources except a one line in History of Khalifa ibn al-Khayyat and a reference to a counter offensive by Byzantines a year after this campaign, that in which Byzantines were defeated, in al-Tabari history. However, the Armenian history attributed to Sebeos, the Christian bishop and historian of the 7th century AD. discusses this battle in some detail. A third important source is the surviving Arabic poetry by Abu al-Ayal al-Hudhali from the first half of the 4th decade AH. Abu al-Ayal was among the Muslim soldiers present in Egypt during the caliphates of Umar and Uthman and participated in this campaign.

Abu al-'Ayal in an open letter in verse addressed to Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan, Amr ibn al-'As, and Abdullah ibn Saad ibn Abi Sarh (governor of Egypt after Amr ibn al-'As) relates, the Muslim soldiers present in Egypt blamed Muawiyah and Ibn Abi Sarah for the defeat. This defeat was among the important factors of Egyptians dissatisfaction with Uthman. The Muslim soldiers present in Egypt played a prominent role in the siege of Uthman's house in Medina, which ultimately led to his assassination. This defeat was the first major setback of Muslims during the twenty-year period of conquests up to that time, and this defeat probably became the main factor in the survival of the Byzantine Empire, unlike the Sassanid Empire. This defeat, due to its important theological and historical consequences, was treated mostly with silence in the Islamic historical sources.

Independent of the reliability and authenticity of the hadith under discussion, this work by Nathaniel Miller shows that the first military campaign against Constantinople occurred during Uthman's time and Yazid did not and due to his young age could not have participated in it and therefore could not be considered among the second group mentioned in the hadith.

🔻"Structure and Argumentation in Islamic Theology", Lec01
speaker, Dr. Hassan Ansari
Sep 9, 2025

🟥 Lecture in Persian, can be watched with closed caption (CC) and auto-translate on our channel.

Summary:
In this session, which was the first in this series of lectures, we presented a brief historical overview of the developments in Islamic theology (‘Ilm al-Kalām). For anyone interested in becoming familiar with the history of Islamic theology, its background, and its relationship with Greek philosophy in just one session, listening to this lecture would be beneficial. In this session, we also discussed the contribution of theology to the civilizational aspects of Islam. Furthermore, we talked about the meaning of general (‘jumalī’) beliefs, what the minimal definition of being a Muslim is, and why Islam does not have a church-style theological system.

speaker, Dr. Hassan Ansari
Sep 16, 2025

🟥 Lecture in Persian, can be watched with closed caption (CC) and auto-translate on our channel.

Summary:
In this session, we became familiar with the preface and introduction of the book Jamal al-‘Ilm wa al-‘Amal. This led to a discussion of rational obligation and scriptural obligation from the perspective of theologians. We also examined the meaning of the “necessities of religion” and the “necessities of the sect,” as well as how these differ from what religious scholars consider to be necessary. Additionally, we explored the scope of doctrinal obligations and the role of theological requirements in the development of religious theology, along with what minimal religious theology signifies from the standpoint of theologians. The discussion further addressed the role of historical transformation in the emergence of religious beliefs and the relationship between belief and history.

Abstract:
In this lecture series, we will explore what the Qur’an means by the term ḥikmah. We will closely examine the verses and passages of the Qur’an in which the term ḥikmah appears, following a roughly chronological order.

As part of our discussion, we will also investigate the engagement—or intertextuality—between these Qur’anic passages and the Biblical wisdom literature. The latter places strong emphasis on acquiring wisdom not only through revealed scripture, but also through contemplation of the natural world and personal life experience.

We believe that understanding this intertextual relationship between the Qur’an and earlier wisdom traditions—especially those found in the Bible—can shed light on the Qur’an’s invocation of ḥikmah, allowing us to better appreciate its depth and nuance.
