Using "If Only" for Present Wishes

Use "If only" + past simple to express a strong wish about a present situation that isn’t true.

SAY THIS:

If only he listened to my advice! 🗣➡️🙉
(Not: If only he listens to my advice.)

If only she knew how much we care. 💔
(Not: If only she knows...)

💡 Quick Tip:
For present wishes → If only + past tense
It’s about imagining a different now!

Reported Speech & Tense Shift 🗣➡️📖
When reporting what someone said, we usually shift the tense back.

CORRECT EXAMPLES:
1️⃣ Pronouns change:

Direct: "I am tired." 😴

Reported: He said (that) he was tired.
(Not: He said that I was tired.)

Direct: "I am very happy." 😊

Reported: Mary said (that) she was very happy.
(Not: Mary said that I was very happy.)

2️⃣ Tense shifts back:

Direct: "I will come back next week." 📅

Reported: She said (that) she would come back the following week.
(Not: She said that she will come back...)

Direct: "I will start jogging again next month." 🏃

Reported: Tom said (that) he would start jogging again the next month.
(Not: Tom said that he will start...)

💡 Key Rule: In reported speech:
🔸 Pronouns change (I → he/she, etc.).
🔸 Tense shifts back (is → was, will → would).
🔸 Time/Place words may also change (here → there, next week → the following week).

"Try Not To"

Always use "try not to" + verb. "Try to not" is grammatically incorrect.

SAY THIS:
He tried not to look at the clock. 🕰
(Not: He tried to not look at the clock.)

I tried not to think about the exam. 😣
(Not: I tried to not think about the exam.)

She tried not to eat too much cake. 🍰
(Not: She tried to not eat too much cake.)

We try not to interrupt others. 🤫
(Not: We try to not interrupt others.)

💡 Simple Rule:
Just remember → Try not to + Verb
Keep "not" right after "try"!

had better + Base Verb

Rule: Always use the base verb (infinitive without "to").

🎯 Examples:
We 'd better go now. 🚗
You 'd better tell him. ⚠️

🚫 Don’t say:
We'd better to go.
You'd better to tell.

💡 Meaning: Strong advice, often urgent.
